Comments or corrections?

Kind of an odd question but I thought the experts would be able to give me some idea. As Pendraken do not make AWI French can I use some other figure as a proxy. I was thinking maybe the Seven Years War figures or something from the French Revolutionary war line? I ask the experts any idea?

This depends on how fussy you are. For me, there are no figures that I have seen that do an adequate job of rendering the AWI French uniform. But then, French troops of this period are an obsession of mine. The French cocked hat is totally unique to this period, and radically different from any other. If push came to shove, you might get by with British line troops. At least the coat and waistcoat would be of similar cut, and the hair pack and even tin canteen would be correct. The cocked hat is closer to right than anything in the SYW. The grenadiers could be Austrian grens from the Napoleonic period. You could also sub Prussian SYW, or AWI Hessian in cocked hat if they make them. The Hessians have a different pack from the French style.

At 10mm? At 10mm?

I'd ask Pendraken for a couple of samples from possible alternatives and choos the one that satifiues you most.

At that scale I'd defy anyone but you to realise it's a proxy.

clibinarium16 Jan 2009 8:47 a.m. PST

Certainly in 10mm you'd still see the difference. I'd say the main issue is while you could use Brits as proxies because some have the fur backpacks, they are in half gaiters, and though some Germans are in gaiters they carry knapsacks instead of backpacks.
Or you could wait on the specific figures to be produced, probably available by the Summer.

Yes you might see the difference when they are at eye level, nose distance, while you are painting them, but standing but looking down at a mass of 10mm figures on the wargames table……….

artslave16 Jan 2009 1:00 p.m. PST

Sorry, I did not realize that these were 10mm. Correct about the gaiters. French should have full above the knee. No pack would solve the problem of slung rather than square on the back. The difference of cocked hat style would also be minimal at this scale.

vtsaogames16 Jan 2009 7:56 p.m. PST

If they are painted by Clibanarium you could tell the difference. And the color of their eyes too.

And I'll accept that with some of the Pendraken castings he might be able to do it as well.

Since I'll be sculpting them it will be my responsibility to make sure the differences are there! Gulp.

Hoist by his own petard!!

use French revolutionary infantry in parade dress – that will do nicely.

Don't forget the three coloured cockade – white – black – red to paint in 10 mm ;-))

Thanks for all the help everyone. 10mm has some very good detail. I would like to use something that is more or less correct even if not 100% so far I was thinking British AWI but now probably the french revolutionary infantry?

Here's a WIP pic of one I'm currently working on, but as I say release is likely to be around summer;

Nobody mentioned the bayonet frog on the cartridge box belt instead of a separate crossbelt – luckily, the sculptor was aware of it.
