Very nice work and it took you only 10 minutes? Are you casting with the PA metal or your own mix? |
Der Alte Fritz | 11 Jan 2009 5:32 p.m. PST |
This is an appealing product line. Every now and then I think that I would like to start casting my own Prince August figures. |

10 minutes each. I painted them black then a heavy coat of each color paint. I only used about six colors each. The metal is a mix of casting metal from ebay, prince august model metal, lead and non leaded solder. |

My daughter bought me a Prince August 25mm mold of the Empress Dragoons, and a horse to go with them. Officer, trumpeter and private man. Full round figures. The figures are just too small for my Willies and Staddens 30 mm, but the sword arms and the trumpet and trumpeter arms are great for the big 30's. I have a couple Staddens painted as trumpeters, but with sword raised at the attack. I can now cut the trumpet from the arm, and sling it over the trumpeter's shoulder so the instrument hangs down behind his back. Also, the scabbard and sword encased can be cut away to use in conversion of figures with "stunted" equipment, as many of the Willy cavalry had. GdeP |

The deletion was a duplicate of the earlier message. Another senior moment – now about 30 minutes of every hour! But I wanted also to complement you on the painting. I also admire how fast you work. GdeP. |

Good start, mrwigglesworth. And at that painting speed, you'll have some huge armies in no time. Alte Fritz, why not buy a few molds and check it out ? Semi-rounds, not for everyone but they do have undeniable charm when you see them massed in formation. Or at least when you view them from the side. ;-) Steve |

You may be unaware of the fact that Irregular Miniatures produces lines of 42mm Quarter-Flats as well. irregularminiatures.co.uk Scroll down the left hand side. |

I bought some of those. Much as I have valued Irregular's productivity, reasonable prices, and stellar service over the years, the Quarter-Flats just aren't very good. Steve |

CorporalTrim, I am sorry to hear that. I thought I might try a few of the Ancients out to see if I liked them. Any chance of posting some pictures?
|

Cyrus, Sure. Don't have any photos at the moment, but I can create a side-by-side comparison with PA. How can I explain it ? Think of it this way. PA figures are relatively flat, but there's still a definite curvature to them even at the edges, a round figure compressed. The Quarter-Flats are rather more like a crudely engraved, very thick German zinnfigur, squared off at the edges. Steve |

CorporalTrim, Thanks for the explanation. I saw the painted French and Indian Wars samples picture on the site. I thought they looked nice and I've always loved Ancients and thought I'd give them a try. Kind of a stepping stone before trying my hand at 30mm Flats which I've owned for years, but frankly, intimidate me. It is easy to paint three dimensions when the figure is three dimensional, but not so much in two. Oh well!

No worries, Cyrus. Made the comparison shot just now: picture If it's any consolation, I find the ancients a bit better on account of their simplicity. But with no cavalry, etc., why would you want to do it ? Have a go at the 30mm flats, they're far superior and there's infinitely more variety. And sorry for the digression, mrwigglesworth. Steve |

Oops, Irregular on the left, PA on the right in the photo. |

CorporalTrim, Wow what a difference! I didn't even need for you to tell me which was which. Your description was spot on.
why would you want to do it ? Because even at my advanced age, I do stupid things on impulse. There is some degree of nostalgia at work as well.
And sorry for the digression, mrwigglesworth. My apologies as well. I wasn't trying to hijack your thread. I thought the French & Indian War range would've been of interest to you as well.

I've always found it interesting that the Irregular figures often don't look good in the unpainted metal, but can be successfully painted up to look excellent as is your sample, Mr W. And all painted in 10 minuets. Very impressive, Mr W, although I'd avoid painting during mazurkas. ;^) |

I've always found it interesting that the Irregular figures often don't look good in the unpainted metal, but can be successfully painted up to look excellent as is your sample, Mr W. mrwigglesworth's is the Prince August one. CorporalTrim provided the painted side-by-side shot. I do agree with your comment regarding Irregular and how much better they look once painted. I didn't find the painted Irregular sample horrible. I merely stated from what CorporalTrim had posted earlier, that I could easily tell the difference.

No problem at all, guys. Coincidentally, just got an e-mail flyer from Prince August announcing the sale of some of the Karoliner and Rossbach moulds for 2 euros. Included is the 6-pounder gun mould, a useful one indeed. Metal model is discounted as well. Steve |

CorporalTrim, Would it be possible to prevail upon you to post any photos of the Irregular Ancients? Curiosity dies hard. Your side-by-side showed what could be accomplished with the F&I range. Great paint job squared off edges and all! |
CorporalTrim | 15 Jan 2009 7:54 p.m. PST |
Never painted any, Cyrus. PM me and I can e-mail you a couple shots of the castings. If you like them, you can have them. And thanks for the kind words about the painting. Steve |

CorporalTrim, I have forwarded a PM to Bill for you. Thanks again for your time. Joe |
