Alright, my brother and I want to get some sort of Sci-Fi crawl game, we are not sure what to look into though. So some advice would be great. We are looking for the following criteria: DM-Less – but preferably with options to have a DM Multiple Races for monsters and players Simple but Elegant Mechanics Blips Cheap (Free is far better) Short-ish (no more than an hour) Thanks, Glenn |

Try Mel Ebbles GunCrawl game. link Haven't had the time to play it yet, but several read throughs and it seems fast and fun. |

So you want Space Hulk with more variety? |

I have a fair amount of his terrain, but I haven't looked much at the game. |

Aside from the "Free is better" part, sounds like THW's 5150. Come to think of it, I'm not positive the "blips" are in 5150, though they appear in a few other THW rules. I'll bet Ed would even put a copy of the blip rules up on the yahoo group if you asked him nicely. |

Never played Space Hulk, so I am not sure. Anyways, we are leaning more towards Sci-Fi Heroquest, but preferably a bit more complex. I need to try out Space Crusade still though. |

You could try to chase down a copy of Legions of Steel, it's a scifi dungeon-crawl. Been OOP for years, now, though. |

Yep, 5150 would work perfect. Also on sale this month. Can be played with or without a DM. link |

Space Hulk: Think Aliens in GW's 40K setting. One side plays a team of Space Marines in power armor ("Terminator armor"), roaming the decks of an immense space derelict. The opponent controls an almost endless horde of bio-engineered killing beasts ("Genestealers") with claws that can rip through said armor (in the game, it's basically for show as it has no statistical presence). The genestealers enter as blip counters; the number of genestealers represented by a blip (from 0 to 6) are hidden until it comes into the LOS of a Space Marine, or the genestealer player decides to reveal it in order to gain a tactical advantage. Space Marines are armed with: Power Sword (sergeant only; allows parries), Stormblaster (automatic fire can produced chained hits; can be set to "overwatch" shooting each time a genestealer takes an action, but might jam) and Flamer (cooks everything OR up to 12 contiguous spaces, depending on edition). Aliens have claws. And more movement. They die in droves, but once they get to the Space Marines, it's slice and dice time. And the genestealers have more dice
Expansions for 1st edition included additional weaponry and command units for the Space Marines, and even faster aliens for the genestealers. Movement in all versions is by a square grid, and very simple to handle. In 1st edition (much preferred), the Space Marine player has only 30 seconds in which to make his move, increasing the "frantic battle for survival" feel. Both editions are a lot of fun. |

You can find the original Aliens board game here. boardgamegeek.com/game/1770 Scroll down to the bottom for the downloads. We played this with miniatures and it was blast. |

Definitely Mel Ebbles Miniature's Gun Crawl. It's a really easy to use and versatile system. And his card models add real atmosphere to the layout. |

Amazon miniatures also has some Legions of Steel stuff left. They used to have the boxed game available as well but that looks to have gone now. The word was they have molds for part of the line too, but since their stock list only seems to be shortening I should think they don't consider casting new ones to be viable. |

We've done sevceral fun sci-fi crawk games using the necromunda rules and my Dwarven forge terrain. They work really well. |

Look for Advanced Space Crusade. I had lot of fun with that one. |

If you can find it I recommend Legions of Steel. It comes with UNE (Humans) and the Legions of Steel (Robots) but there are 3 other races you can get. I don't think I have any of the box sets left but I have a large consignment selection of figs, rules, scenarios and floor tiles. |

Both Doom and Space Hulk are a lot of fun. Doom has the advantage of being in print and has more variety. |
