Not everything can be all blue, so I picked up some zouaves for my Union army. They have baggy pants and fezes. I was sort of looking for a unit that had some color in it, but so much of what I find is a unit that vanished early in the war. Anyone have any suggestions? |

The 3rd Pennsylvania Aerial Dragoon Zouaves. No matter how hard I recruit them, and train them, they get shot out of the skys in the first three turns. |

5th NY is probably the best as it lasted from the beginning to the end. |

114th PA – Collis' Zouaves – would be my pick Fought from near the start of the war, still dressed in Zouave uniform thru 1864 (when they were, in recognition of hard service, the Headquarters Brigade of the Army of the Potomac) 5th NY is also a good pick |

Don't forget 84th NY – 14th Brooklyn. NOT Zouaves but does add color! |

Try one of these units: 5th New York (Duryea's Zouaves) 114th Pennsylvania (Collis's Zouaves – at Gettysburg) 146th New York (Fought in Zouave Uniform at the Wilderness) |

The 5th NY and the 10th NY were both Zouave regiments and they were brigaded together in 1862-63 in the Peninsula and at Chancellorsville, to name a few battles. Gouvernor Warren was the colonel of the brigade. They were a part of Sykes's division of US Regulars. |

146th NY and 155th Penn. awarded Zouave costume for their service at Gettysburg. 155th yellow piping, if you want variety. JW |

I'm surprised at some of you. The 5th New York Zouaves were not around after 1862, maybe into early 63. I don't know when they were disbanded exactly, but remaining members went into newly formed Zouave regiments such as the 146th New York, and maybe some others. There were new Zouave regiments whose uniforms strongly resembled the 5th New York, but don't know where they participated? Someone else help me out here. I don't have my references available right now. |

The desire for adding color drove me to paint my greatcoated infantry (28mm Foundry) as zouaves. Well, at least red pants and red cap. Currently, they are on my soldier table flanking a Confederate artillery unit. I also have a Confederate zouave unit, gray with red pants and cap. Not historical, I imagine, but I have been "mirror imaging" the units in my ACW armies. I am getting less concerned with historical accuracy in my old age. Have fun with your zouaves! Craig |

Well there is another route you can go also. That is the Zouave Brigade in the AOP. It was made up of several zouave unit wearing the standard uniform precribed for zouaves. It was also reenforced with the 5th NY veteran zouaves. Peter Griffith |

146th NY and 155th Penn. awarded Zouave costume for their service at Gettysburg. 155th yellow piping, if you want variety. >> Not the case! The 146th wore the zouave uniform AT Gettysburg! The other regiments in the brigade got them AFTER.The 155th PA,and the 140th NY.I believe the 146th NY and 114th PA,were the ONLY AoP regiments to wear the zouave uniform at Gettysburg. Bob |
