I mean like when you are gaming fighting action with "secret agent" miniatures and games.

If so, what specific CDs do you recommend for all that espionage intrigue, action and drama?

No, I find music either "disappears" into the background – in which case why have it on? – or it is intrusive, which is a good reason to turn it off.

I have used music *before* a game to set the mood…

I've never ordered fromt hem, but moviegrooves.com in the UK sell a lot of soundtracks from 60's spy movies:

"I find music either 'disappears' into the background – in which case why have it on? . . ."

Ah, but it's all subliminal. We want you to think it has "disappeared". :)

I am currently pulling together a play list for Pulp gaming, and it includes a few Bond tracks. "Cassino Royale" by Herb Albert -- simply makes the world a happier place, doggone it.

Intrusive? I prefer to think of it as a covert insertion.

Thomoss,

Is this the one?

Ever since I started gaming in the 1970s, I have had music on in the background. I don't always worry if it fits the period. Today, I record music off of my online radio stations, which are free. I have a large collection of Western soundtracks, all the LotR, swing/jazz for WWII, The Great Escape, The Patriot (excellent soundtrack!), ect. 5GB worth.

Back in the day, I used to have a compilation of the Bond themes from the movies. One of my favorite records for gaming. I'm sure they still make them.

AOL Radio has a soundtrack channel. You might want to look at that. It's free and has lots of good mood music.

I played in a game where you had to hum the theme to Underdog during your game turn.

You can hear Herb Alpert here:

I got it from his greatest hits -- the collector album you showed is a bit beyond my gaming budget, I'm afraid!

Aha -- here's the soundtrack collection I got from the local library:

100 greatest film themes [sound recording]
City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra.

These were only some of the songs I used for inspiration, but it was an excellent resource.

I played You Only Live Twice and Diamonds Are Forever soundtracks in the background when running espionage games way back in the '80's.

I was listening to the soundtracks of Quantum of Solace, and remarked to myself, how X-File-ish they sounded, even with a bit of Pirates of the Caribbean thrown in.

It's definitely not like Goldfinger or Thunderball.

The instrumental You Only Live Twice is amazing.

I don't play music while gaming, it is just an annoying distraction.

I did however play my 'John Barrys Greatest Hits' CD to death, in fact to such an extent that my wife complained the house was like a 1970s cinema.

I just love the jazz bit on the original 007 theme, or Matt Munroe singing 'From Russia with Love', even the theme from OHMSS is very good. The more recent Bond songs have just been dire, although I quite liked 'The Living Daylights' tune.

I used to have mood music for D&D back when I played. Hell we were such geeks, for dungeon/dark settings, we played by candlelight. I used to have a mix tape for Spy games back in the 80's, lots of bond stuff on it.

Now When I wargame I play music, and best match it to the game as I can. Playing Fire&Fury, soundtrack to Glory/Gettysburg/Civil War Band CD's. I played SYW game the other night, the music was Pirates of Carribean(Stretch I know, but its really good) and I then had on soundtrack from Last of the Mohicans.

I am always on the hunt for mood music. My new Favorite is Pirates of the Carribean, 1st one. It's really really good.

Cheers, Xin

No, but I haven't done any spy games either.

Sounds like a good idea.

Secret Agent Man would be useful too – great song!

The only Bond soundtrack I have is View to a Kill. I tend to use other music to set the mood. Strange with as large of a soundtrack collection as I have, you'd think I'd have more Bond in it.

The Spy Museum in Washington DC has two great compilation CD's of various theme songs for sale in their gift shop. You can also order them on line…

ogrefencer22 Dec 2008 12:40 p.m. PST

There is a new Bond Soundtrack compilation called 'The Best of Bond….James Bond' with everything upto and including Casino Royale. I had an earlier version without that and Die Another Day on which was pretty good. It drives the family mad! The best other Bond OST though has got to be Thunderball.
