Here's a link to a battle report (historical article with maps and OrBats for both sides) and pics of a recent refight of the Battle of Vimeiro (21 August 1808).

Wow… That was absolutely incredible… Drool…

grenadier corporal16 Dec 2008 12:51 a.m. PST

I just awoke from a dream …
Can't find words to describe my feelings …
And it was not a demonstration game, just for private use?
/Very big sigh/

Holy heck … that is amazing!

So much to see, so beautifully done.

My only criticism is despoiling such a gorgeous set-up with those ugly casualty rings.

But top marks for what must be one of the most impressive games I've ever seen pictured.

An absolutely amazing layout. I had assumed that it was a static display (given all the vignettes) and then I spotted the casualty caps…

Cardinal Hawkwood16 Dec 2008 4:10 a.m. PST

mighty mighty impressive

If ANYONE ever says they don't like to play with figures that don't match in size or heft, or from different manufacturers, then they haven't seen this board…everything and anything, AWI, Carlist, Front Rank, Redoubt, Elite, Perry…you name it and there it is, all on the board together and looking good.

Great room. What are those boxes over the windows, some kinda Zombie screens?

bgbboogie17 Dec 2008 2:38 a.m. PST

Absolutely fantastic and in such a large scale also…

Let's face it, the Sharpe books are just romantic bodice rippers for men! Do you consider reading Sharpe is historical research?

There are a lot of over complicated rule out there – but like every historical period Napoleonics can be played from skirmish to commander level. Most of those rules problems stem from the incorrect level of abstraction

The Napoleonic wars were 3 times longer than WW2 – most wargamers would recognise that an A10 tank is unlikely to have fought a King Tiger but think that Napoleonic gamers a snobby if they expect a similar level of accuracy for their period

In this case unfamiliarity breeds contempt! .

Lovely figures, lovely pics!
Well done!

donlowry18 Dec 2008 6:14 p.m. PST

Please don't tell me those were 6mm figures!

Simon Boulton30 Dec 2008 4:25 a.m. PST

Superb game, very inspiring. I liked the French battalion made up of perry plastics and the Eureka revolutionary wars figures.

Lovely Joe…really Lovely…
I can see it now….all those "of course, 25mm is just a skirmish scale, NOBODY actually plays REAL games in the larger scales, 6mm is just SO much better" posts

Once again a top post! I was racking my brains for an Idea for tommorows battle, I have four of the lads coming over and I had done no preperation.
One click and a bit of printing later your scenario has saved my bacon. Looking forward to refighting this one in a few hours time.

Thanks Joe!

OK, I am going to have to move to the UK so that I can play in games like this one. Terrific battle and set up.

I particularly like all of those vignettes on the table top. They really add something to the game.

Joe Dever14 Jan 2009 11:42 p.m. PST

Der Alte Fritz: Thanks for your kind comments, much appreciated. If ever you manage to make your way ‘across the pond', we'd make you a very welcome guest.

To whet your appetite a little more for some UK-style wargaming on the grand scale, here's a couple of links to a Gettyburg game (2nd Day) we played last October (‘08).

This is the link to the pictures of the troop set-ups prior to play:

And this link will take you to the pics of the game itself:
