This will be my first union regiment that I'll paint up for my ACE project.

but what color were their uniform, the "classic" Zouave uniform had red paints, but in one pic I found of the 9th thay had dark blue pant with brown jackets.

is this correct?

I'm not a Zouave expert (I'm sure a few will be along shortly when they get back from the holiday). However, I believe the 9th New York, "Hawkins Zouaves" didn't wear the so called classic colors. They had dark blue baggy pants, a dark blue zouave style jacket with red trim, white leggings, and a red fez cap with a dark blue tassel. I assume they didn't keep this uniform all war, but I don't know if and when they changed to a more standard Union uniform.

EJNashlll, you are correct about their uniform. As far as I know they wore it throughout their term of service which ended shortly after Antietam. The other difference in their uniform, besides the pants being blue, they were not nearly as baggy, but closer to the standard cut of trousers.

Right you are – I like the 9th New York, but as noted they wore dark blue pants – for a classic Zouave regiment, I like the 5th New York or the 114th PA (I painted up a bunch last year as a Christmas present)

The Osprey book on American Civil War Zouaves I believe has color pictures of this unit in it. It has my unit on the cover if anyone has any questions about painting Tiger Rifles in the correct uniform.
