Hi Folks I'm not normally a 28mm gamer but I've had a request from a mate to find some figures for a 'Tavern brawl' type of game and I'm having some difficulty finding what he wants. I'm looking for a range that has swordsmen, a few with pistols, clubs and other such weapons – all on foot. Period could be anything from about 1640 to 1740 and a mix of 'gentlemen' and 'ruffians'. I'm open to any suggestions but they must be available in the UK. I'm looking for fairly 'characterful' figures and plenty of variety. So far none of the few ranges thatI have found really meet all these criteria. Tony H |

Brigade Games has a nice selection of swashbucklers: link |

Redoubt has a "Three Musketeers" range. |

Here are some pictures of the Brigade Games swashbucklers, along with some Foundry and Old Glory figures in a Gloire game we played last year: link Jim |

Brigade Games figures are excellent! I used them for Musketeers & Cardinal's Guards. link link Olivier |

Thanks guys The Redoubt range is too limited, only musketeers and Cardinals men – the Pirates range may add the variety though – I'll have to get him to look at those. Brigade, nice – unfortunately not a UK firm. Does anyone know a UK stockist that carries the whole range. I found a few at Northstar but not all of them. Also they are a bit pricey with the nosediving £0.00 GBP |

Blue Moon sells several different boxes of figs for that period. link |

Check the Old Glory UK site for Blue Moon in the UK. They run 20GBP a box for a dozen foot figures. Bases are about the size of a U.S. quarter with a smooth ring around a detailed central base, rocks, cobblestone, sand etc. link |

I noticed the Blue Moon but didn't know they had a UK stockist, so thanks for that – unfortunately the 2 foot boxes are from different periods. |

Not 28mm, but the best looking musketeers on the market, check out Eureka's 40mm link |

As you say, not 28mm – not cheap either. It comes as a bit of a shock the prices of 28mm when I'm used to paying for 6 & 10mm. |

I suppose that a 6mm buckler is just too small to swash. |

True, but at least you don't buckle under the weight. |

GildasFacit, some of the wonderful Redoubt ECW figures may work for you
there are options that you can choose that will give you clubmen, pistols, swords, even halberds, etc., with head options from plumed hats to bareheaded. Berlichtingen, thanks for the 40mm reference. I have some terrain that these figures will work with. Cheers |

One thing I absolutely love about the Eureka 40mm is the faces are the faces of the Richard Lester movies, so d'Artagnan looks like Michael York, ect. I agree that they aren't cheap, but for a tavern brawl, the number of figures needed shouldn't be overly high |

Can't recall the name of the rules right now, but there is a free set on the web, that permits throwing items, jumping about, and other daring deeds, with sword-play to boot. Looked good when I read about them awhile back. I'm sure someone here can point to them, for a good tavern fight. |

OK folks, after all your sage advice I think that Redoubt offers the best solution. Possibly not the best figures (though not bad by anymeans) but their ranges do fit his description better than any of the others available. Next questions : possibly Condotta can answer these
Do the 'Pirate' and 'ECW' ranges match the size of the '3 Musketeers' range ? I have a memeory of there being a size difference mentioned in one of the posts I searched through. Do the ECW figures come with a head or do you order those separately ? I think he intends to use the old Yaquinto game 'Swashbuckler' with some modification. Thanks again for the help Tony H |

Tony we do a three musketeers range that covers swordsmen, ruffians, etc. It is fairly cheap as well, from a UK source: link Mike |

Interesting Mike – were these orginally Gladiator figures ? |

Tony Yes they were. Though the Queen set, Puritans and the Sedan chairs are more recent additions. Mike |

Redoubts ECW range are ever so slightly smaller than the 3Musketeer ranges. But the foot at least mix well enough and if you consider that the Musketeers and their dastardly enemies are larger than life anyway
. I mix them myself with no problems. Can't answer for the pirate range. You could also (I believe) get away with the Renegade figures which are also largish, or so I am told. |
