I avoided the military…I served in the US Air Force instead.

Capt, US Air Force
Edwards AFB, 1989-1993
Flight Test Engineer-I did project engineering and management on parachute and airdrop systems plus a smattering of various other oddball topics.

I was a rarity; the Air Force sent me where I wanted to go to do what I wanted (and was trained) to do. Plus I got to fly (albeit in the back of MC-130s, AC-130s and C-17s, but there was no way I could be real aircrew in the USAF with bad eyes and hay fever.)

I've been a wargamer in the UK for 40+ years and, apart from 2 blokes I started gaming with in the mid 60's (both served in WW2), I haven't met any other wargamers who I know to have been in the forces.

A lot of U.S and U.K service and combat veterans. Interesting.

I served a year (2005-2006) in the Greek Army as a conscript. Sergeant Mechanized Infantry and then Presidential Guard. Not the best of times, not the worst of times. I know that many Greek-war gamers are ex or active prof. military.
