Hi there,

I've been looking at the plastic ACW Infantry offered by Perry Minis and was just wondering if anyone here knew what the 'simple rules' were like and how they played out-of-the-box (once the figures are assembled of course)?

Many Thanks
~Ant

I just got mine in the mail yesterday. The rules are very basic. Like something you can read, explain, then run in like 5-10 minutes. There is another post here somewhere that has most of the rules explained. Basics are range bands tell you what you need to hit. Movement is random 2d6". Morale is roll higher then number of losses or run away. They are nothing all that special, but then they are nice in their simplicity.

Hi HyperBunny,

Would you say the Perry rules are skirmish level, or do units have a particular size? Also, do the rules cover artillery and cavalry?

Thanks! Jeff

Cavalry rules come in the Cavalry set. No artillery rules as of yet. The game uses units of 18 figures individually mounted for infantry. So you get 2 units per box. Cavalry are units of 12 also mounted individually, so you get one unit per box of them.
Played a couple games already and had lots of fun with them.

Suggested house rules add-ons to make the game a little more complex:

Instead of having a set "player A and player B" roll off each turn.

Instead of issueing orders one unit at a time and then acting them out, have both players issue all their orders before rolling to see who will be "player A" that turn. This rule would require you to make chits or counters with each of the orders on them, be sure to leave one side blank. That way you can place all your orders face down and only flip them face up when the unit activates.

Each player only activates one unit at a time rather then their whole force. So player A activates a unit. Then player B activates a unit. Then back to player A , then B, and so on. Once all units on both sides have activated the turn ends. This would prevent whole forces raining death upon their enemy before they have a chance to do anything.

Instead of issueing orders to your whole force, roll a die to find out how many orders you may issue in a turn. Games with 8 or less units per side could roll a d6(+1 or +2?) for the number of orders. Games with 9 or more could roll 2d6.

None of these have been tried yet, at least not with this ruleset. Some of them require that you use the other ones, some would work without the others. Anyways, these allow you to get a little more depth to a nice "fast-play" set of rules without ruining the original.

If anyone does try any of these rules, please let me know if you enjoyed them or not.

Is there a good full set of rules for this scale?

What do you want out of a set of "good" rules? At what level of command do you want to play? To you want individual basing or stands? How many model figs do you want to have on the table at one time?

Something that doesnt require an advanced degree and will fit ln a 4X6 or 4X8 table

My Brother and I tried them out this evening. They're easy to learn. Easy to play and was a lot of fun.

The first skirmish was a clear victory for me. We split my Perry plastic force in half. We each had one 18 man foot unit and one 6 man cavalry unit. My cavalry destroyed his infantry, my infantry gunned his cavalry down.

The second battle, my Brother used my two 18 man foot units and one 12 man cavalry unit. I used my French Perry Plastics. (I didn't have any other ACW guys.) 3 units of 18 foot. My French were slaughtered. I managed to lay waste to his cavalry but his infantry weighted all of my French down with lead.

They are pretty cool rules. We had a good time and we're going to fight it out again tomorrow!

Is their a review of the rules, or someplace to download the rules..

I have some victrix figures, and thought the basic rules was very good, like the roll to Act rules, and removing dead figure ideas etc…

Maybe i should buy some perry if the rules are most skimish, as victrix is 4 man to a base etc
