What base frontage would be adequate to fit 5 10mm miniatures in a straight line? I was thinking 40mm, but would they fit side-by-side in 30mm? I want it to be fairly close ranks, but not smashed together, and it's important to stay in very close to a lone. If it helps, these are Old Glory 10mm ACW minis that I'm wanting to base. |

I have the OG Union and Confederate command strips with five figures side-by-side per strip. A strip barely fits on a 1-inch base, which is approximately 25mm, so a command strip should fit on a 30mm base. I also have OG skirmishers, which are individual figures instead of strips. Five of them also barely fit on a 1-inch base when placed side-by-side. I don't have any other OG 10mm but someone probably will be along quickly with more information. |

For separate 10mm figs you will probably manage to get 5 across a 40mm base. It does depend on the pose. When figures are on strips then 6 is possible. |

So 5 of the individuals should fit on a 30mm base, if they almost fit on a 25mm base, right? Or should I go for 40mm? My question is because I'm working on a ACW rule set due to lack of any that really fit my bill of what I want, and 30mm bases would be so much more manageable for the units that 40mm. |

I think it is *possible* to put five individual OG figures side-by-side on a 30mm base since they fit on a 25mm base (it's actually a 1-inch base, but close enough for a test). But it is a tight fit. Let me clarify -- this is *not* how I base my 10mm figures. However, I do have some 1-inch bases and some OG 10mm ACW figures, so when I read your post, I tried it out tonight just to see. I hope someone here who actually bases the same way as you will help you out. I don't want to steer you in the wrong direction. You might want to try making your own cheap bases with cardboard or balsa first just to see if you like the look. |

Here's what I do when testing out new basing ideas. Draw your bases onto graph paper and group them in the various unit formations you will be using (such as line, column, square, etc.). Put some double sided tape down on the bases drawn on the graph paper and put your figures on them. This should give you an idea of how the figures will rank up on the bases and in various formations. For 10mm figures I generally use a 30mm wide by 20mm deep base for a single or staggered rank of 5 figures. |

You can fit most single 10mm figures on a 5mm per figure frontage. For the smaller sorts like GHQ it's no problem, but with the larger sorts, especially if they have a larger integral base, you may have to trim down the base with clippers. I have figures from all sorts of lines in all sorts of periods (working on ACW now), and 5mm per figure for close order troops works and looks great. |

A lot of my OG ACW strips will not fit on a one inch base. |

Here are some pics of my OG 10mm figures mounted on 1-inch square bases. (Scroll down the page, the ACW stuff is mixed in with my other 10mm projects.) link |

Thanks for the answers, and the pics. That has made my decision for me! |
