The latest issue of "GameBuyer" has a full page ad from Your Move Games for an historical version of Battleground Fantasy Warfare, which has been discussed frequently on TMP. The subject of the first release is the Second Punic War. But the YMG Web site doesn't seem to have any information on the historical version yet that I can find:

Chad, any indication as to when more information will be available?

Thanks,

Allen

From what I had heard they would be available for preorder just after Xmas.

I think they are going to be packaged differently from the fantasy sets in that you will buy both two armies at a time i.e. a complete ready to go battle.

They've published two historical periods – Alexander v. Persia and 2nd Punic War, along with reinforcement decks for each, the 3.1 rules, and historical scenarios with designer's notes.

All seems excellent, and we're just getting into them now. They are on sale from rattrapgames.com and with the 2D terrain set they provide one of the most economical and portable "miniatures" games around.

While the mechanics are not novel, they have been put together nicely. The differentiation between historical types has been made genuinely interesting. with Hastati, Principes and Triarii each being different and useful in different ways. Same with Gauls, Spanish and Libyans.

Overall, I'd say that it is HOW they executed the design rather than any novel mechanic which makes the system work.

Also, a great cross-over game for your friends that are boardgamers – for $20 USD they can buy their own decks and throw down a pickup game on any dining or coffee table.

Highly recommended!
