Hello Everyone,

The bulk of my miniature collection is from around 1977 to 1988. Back then, I collected mostly Ral Partha and Grenadier Models miniatures. I have been out of collecting and painting for at least 15 years. I am ready to get back into it.

I really like the work of Tom Meier and Jullie Guthrie.

I noticed later on, post 1980s, that many of the Fantasy miniatures got really chunky and the features and weapons become real heavy looking. I realize that many were heavy looking in the past also, but the trend seemed to be going that way.

Are there any current miniature companies, outside of Thunderbolt Mountain, that make miniatures in that old 1970s/1980s "Lord of the Rings" style?

Just Curious.
Thanks,
Sean in California

Mega Miniatures is a good place to start. Also, if you're interested, I might have some old ones for sale.

Also have a look on eBay for people selling off old figures.

Both Zagloba and fred12df make good suggestions.

I might add a few things…

Many of the old Ral Partha sculpts you like are still available through Iron Wind Metals.

Many of the Grenadier figures you like are available from Mirliton ( milriton.it ), an Italian company with US distribution.

While not good for humans, the plastic D&D collectible miniatures (recently discontinued) has proven a good source for inexpensive classic RPG monsters and beasts similar to the 1970's and 1980's styles. Some local game stores and many online eTailers sell singles, used figures, for a pittance.

RAFM has a small line of figures similar to your interest.

One note about Mega Miniatures, a few months back they re-introduced a large line of Julie Guthrie sculpts.

See a topic with lots of other suggestions…

I have everything they have released so far, and I am very pleased so far. More great stuff to come from them in the future, too. The style is a little different from what you might want, but they are all based on the drawings from the old MM.

Garrison Sword and Sorcery figures are from that era:

The Dungeon Crawl Classic miniatures of Goodman games might be of interest.

Julie Guthrie has sculpted some figures for Reaper, I couldn't really tell you if her stuff for them tends to fit with old minis or not. I find that some of the reaper stuff fits with old minis better than others. That variance is also true of Wargods figures and the plastic prepainted D&D minis.

Other options include Celtos, old Glory's Ghost fantasy line, and Harlequin's fantasy figures now made by Black Tree Designs. I also draw from historical lines from BTD, Old Glory and Gripping Beast.

Werner Klocke's early work (especially Das Schwarze Auge stuff) and some of the miniatures Niehaus has done for Assassin and Excalibur.

RPE carries some DSA stuff:

There's an outfit (can't remember the name) Blue Water or some such that manufactures some nice stuff as well. I'll see if I can't find the guy's business card.

Blood Moon stuff looks like some of the better Grenadier stuff to me (the critters anyway):

Yeah,

I always liked Lance and Laser.
They have some really cool Skeleton figures.

Plus, their Pendragon series is really nice.

I have been looking through everyone's recommendations.
It makes me wish that I had a clone to go to work, while I collected and painted.

Have a good weekend everyone.

Hey Blackscribe,

Bluewater Miniatures ( bluewaterminiatures.com ) has just put up their website, and they adding more stuff all the time. Jullie Guthrie did a figure or two for TA-HR ( A Panther & a 1/2 Orc I Think. ) , and one of Bluewater's Sculptors also worked for TA-HR.

Julie Guthrie was always one of my favourite designers.

Denizen has some cool old sculpts.

Also don't forget Vendel.
