I am looking for a good history of the Belgian Congo that is not "King Leopolds Ghost"- I am looking for more of a 20th Century focus, from WWI up to Independence, and then the Katanga seccession and the various "mercenary" conflicts after Congolese independance. Has anyone come across anything that might fit the bill? I suspect all that im looking for will require multiple works, which will be a welcome challenge. Thanks in advance. |

As far as the Mercenaries in the Congo go, "Mad" Mike Hoare's memoir "Mercenary" is a good day-to-day campaign report. It'd be a great source for generating wargaming scenarios. You can get a used paperback copy from Amazon for less than $2. USD |

IIRC there's a book called "Dragon Operations, Hostage Rescues in the Congo." Obviously it only deals with these operations, and a lot of it was political background and manuevering before the operations got the green light. Got mine from Amazon or ebay, can't remember which. |

If you want some information about Operation Dragon Rouge (rescue by Belgian Paracommandos of civilians in Stanleyville) and a fairly good background on the Congo succession in the early 60's try this link from the US Army CGSC site: link Cheers |

There is a surprisingly good historical overview in TooFatLardies new release "B'Maso!". I bought the pdf and then DEVOURED every word of the large work. Nineteen info-packed pages on the Congo. And the information includes everything you could want to know about the forces involved. Not limited to the Congo, covers all of post WWII Africa conflicts. I highly recommend it. Chick |

"Surprisingly good"? B'Maso is a product of twenty five years and more research, combined with living in Africa during the period covered. I hope it doesn't surprise anyone who was there. |

I second Chick's view on B'Maso, but even though it is "a product of twenty five years and more research, combined with living in Africa during the period covered," there are no rules for trains. |

Very strange response, toofatlardies. I think my comments are extremely positive, yet seems I unintentionally insulted ya. Sorry for that. BUY B'Maso, you'll be glad you did ! Chick |

Chick, not at all, I was amused by it. Sorry if I gave any other impression. Bob's right, there are no rules for trains. 8^D |

So, now you MUST tell us where and when and why you lived in Africa. Details, man ! Chick |
