Chaps,

I have tried to join the Yahoo group, but no answer yet. I want to start my french soon but want an idea of base sizes for 25mm. My Prussian Cavalry are 2 to a base on a 50mm stand. At present my Prussians are all on individual bases.

Now should I base a units and if so should I keep some figures on single bases for skirmishers?

many thanks,

Nick

The typical basing was 4 figures per stand IIRC and for 15mm figures it was 40mm width by 15mm depth – which happens to be DBx standard. I could check at home when I can pull the rule book.

TDFG is a reasonable set of rules but not the only one for the period so it's worth looking for something that won't base you into a corner and hinder experimenting with other rules such as 1870, POW or one of the Fire & Fury FPW variants. I suspect you may be best off mounting individually/in pairs and using movement trays.

TDFG gives figure base sizes for 15mm suggesting they are doubled for 25mm to Infantry 3/4" x 1" and Cavalry 1" by 2" but then they are put in units as follows (again upsized to 25mm)

French Line 4 stands of 4 figures therefore 4 x (3" x 1")
French Chasseurs 8 stands of 3 figures 3 x (2 1/4" x 1")
French Cavalry 4 stands of 3 figures 4 x (3" x 2")

In terms of Prussian foot you are looking at units of 4 x 5 figure stands. 4 x (3 3/4" x 1")

Remember the scenarios in TDFG require a 5" by 8" table for 15mm.

Cheers Jeremy, I am looking making some stands for mounting 1 UK Penny based troops and basing my French straight on. Most of my Prussians will just sit in the slots but from some of the pictures in the book it appears that infantry can be put into skirmish requiring seperate bases. I will work with 20mm per infantry figure and 25mm per Cavalry figure.

Many thanks no I just need the Yahoo group moderator to approve me!

Nick,

Once you are in the Yahoo Group you can find tabletop maps for each of the scenarios in the book. Simplifes the contouring from the period maps in the rules

I am looking forwards to joining the group, apllied about 2 weeks ago, must be a stringent vetting proceedure!

The stand sizes for 25mm/28mm figures are doubled the 15mm stand sizes.

With the French, you have the option of basing them on 4-man stands (the original organization for the French in the first edition of the rules that appeared in The Courier) or you can base them on 3-man stands (which is a more historical organization). The 3-man stands also allows you to use them in other wars of the period (eg. Crimean, Franco-Austrian).

A 3-man infantry stand for 25mm figures would be 2 1/4" wide x 1" deep. A 4-man stand would be 3" wide x 1" deep.

Skirmishers are not mounted on single man bases. Rather, skirmish formation is represented by having a 1/8" gap (1/4" for 25mm figures) between the bases.

Cheers Robert, found your website a couple of weeks ago. Busy churning out my Prussians, a few divisions with Helion, Baker Coy and Foundry troops (Helion and Baker mix quite well)

The French will be started in the New Year, busy buying Foundry but also got hold of some Casterway from Australia, although I will need a few more of the latter.

Tally Ho!
