I'm thinking about getting into Ancient, Medieval and/or Renaissance miniature wargaming. But I'm a gamer
I want to play the game! I'm not a miniature collector/painter. For example; I play HOTT and Supersystem using the heroclix type of figures. I like the weight (or lack of) and durability of the plastic miniatures. Do you all know of any manufactures who makes decent 25mm to 28mm Ancient, Medieval and Renaissance figures? Please include links. Thank you, Warren |

P.S. – I'd prefer hard plastic to soft, but will take either in a pinch. |

Not much. Zvezda has a few from their Ring of Rule game that might do in a pinch. Beyond that there's GW's fantasy stuff, which ranges from OK, to a fantasy version of the MA. I wouldn't use them myself

No one makes painted Historical miniatures in plastic. Heroscape has some Romans, Greeks, Vikings, Samurai and Knights that are pre-painted. They don't make all the troop types for a specific army as it's not required for Heroscape fantasy/Sci-Fi game. Check on Ebay for lots of painted units or armies, but it's metal miniatures that you'll find. However, GW Fantasy Bretonians and Empire plastic troops can be used for historical medievals and Renaissance. You'd have to look for painted units or ask someone to paint them for you. GW plastic troops are multipart and rather brittle compared to Heroclix or Heroscape figures. |

There's not really much in what you're asking about yet. And almost nothing prepainted. Warlord Games and Wargames Factory have romans and celts and such, with more coming out. Just use google for those, or the handy Manufacturer's link on the left hand side bar of the front page. It's very useful. :) |

The only plastic Medieval figures I can think of off the top of my head are the now OOP last edition Warhammer Bretonnians. Now, they are too tarted up to be considered historical. Great 13th C barded knioghts and longbowmen. Some of the Empire troops of the previous edition would work well for the Renaissance,, particularly as Swiss or Landsknechts. Again with the present edition, not so much. Wargames Foundry is in the stages of designing 100 Years War French and English. THOSE I am really waiting for. |

For Renaissance, the next-to-last generation of GW's Empire troops work better than the more recent ones. They are multi-part plastics, and have a lot of versatility. auction Actually, those were two generations back, maybe. They mix very nicely with the Empire Militia plastics. |

Ok so Fifty4, is that some sort of teaser you posted and then deleted? unfair! :) Damon. |

Probably you should start considering 1/72 scale, which are 23-25mm,bottom to top of the head, depending on manufacturer.Plenty of choices there. The best source is: link |

I think you're right, nevals. I found the site you linked to, checked it over, and liked what I was seeing. The 1/72 scale is about 20mm right? About an inch tall? I really can live without the minis being pre-painted, but I was really wanting 28mm so I could use them with some other games. Maybe this is an opportunity? Are there other folks out there that would like a wider range of 28mm plastic miniatures? I'd really have to dig around for some info because I don't know squat about making molds to inject the plastic into to make the little guys. |

Hey warrenss, they are not plastic but recently an announcement was made about painted 25mm ancients, at least romans but probably others too. Unless I am greatly mistaken it was Old Glory Miniatures that announced them. oldgloryminiatures.com Not painted, but there are several lines of 25mm plastic miniatures now available -- off the top of my head, Warlord Games and Wargames Factory. I just got my Wargames Factory Marian Romans (think the HBO series ROME) and they look great! Warlord makes later romans of the empire, and peopl say mostly nice things about them too. Of course you'd have to assemble and paint them yourself. That might be too much of a hassle for you if you are not a hobbyist, so maybe look into paper flats? Some of them are surprisingly attractive. There are also paper images of warriors available that look straight down on the soldiers. I'm sure you will find something to suit you. Actually, the wargames factory marian romans might be a good way to try your hand at modeling -- they come with shield transfers and their dress is pretty simple. All the best, khurasanminiatures.tripod.com |

As has been mentioned, older Warhammer plastics are pretty good. And in time you might find more of what you are looking for, as recently, ACW and Napoleonics have started being turned out in plastic. |

I'd like to see Wargames Factory make some generic dark ages miniatures. Hint Hint. Anyone else? |
| Slave2Darkness | 23 Oct 2008 8:30 a.m. PST |
Right after they make some generic archers, javelinmen and slingers in 28mm for FoG (especially for Rise of Rome). Got that T? |

Wargames Foundry is in the stages of designing 100 Years War French and English. I am horrified in thinking what Wargames Foundry plastics would cost

Warren,I am pretty much like you.Like to play with miniatures, have no time and patience to paint-and I am not atracted to that aspect of the hobby. This is what I have done:I became a member of Old Glory Army. With 40% off, their 304 pack, cost me 18$.For 30 metal figures ,infantry ,a good deal.I prime them white ,and ready to go.One day, when I retire, maybe I'll decide to paint, but by that time I'll be so distracted and blind that I doubt it will really happen. When I was a kid ,I had tonnes of 1/72 soldiers.Probably because of the memories, till these days ,i prefer a feeling and texture of plastic to metal. |

"When I was a kid ,I had tonnes of 1/72 soldiers.Probably because of the memories, till these days ,i prefer a feeling and texture of plastic to metal." Not to mention, when you go to a friend's house, they are a darn sight lighter to carry. (Thinking of the future of my back just as much as the future of my wallet.) I'd really like to stick with 25-28mm so they be compatible with the miniatures I have with my other games. Liked to be able to mix & match. |

If you want cheap, and can live with unpainted, then go with 1/72nd plastics which are in the range 23m-23mm. You can get 40-60 figures for $8 USD (somewhere around that sort of calculation.) You don't have to assemble these figures which is going to get you to the table a lot faster. If you can live with lead, Old Glory painted will be ideal for you. $2 USD a painted figure is OK for most people. People foam at the mouth about OG. But the sculpts and paint jobs will be good. 54 (Wargames Factory) will soon make an announcement about pre-painted plastics (I can feel it in my water – I haven't heard anything.) I expect this will be on or about $2 USD a figure since the price has to follow OG. These will be lighter than lead so you can save something on shipping by regular post (but not by courier service where the dimension is considered.) Neil games2trains.com |

I've just looked at the Warlord website and been quite stunned that they are producing a range of ECW/TYW plastics in the New Year and the quality looks amazing
well worth checking out. |

except the warlord stuff is going to be very small like the perry ones so i would go with tag or renegade instead |

except the warlord stuff is going to be very small like the perry ones Any hard confirmation for this? AFAIK their Romans and Celts have been of slightly differing sizes, so I would not start taking too many conclusions from those. Griefbringer |
