Nice! Yes, those are Orion (ex Marx IIRC) Pirates and Hat Marines. I have a load plus 8+ ships that I need to complete.

Thanks for the inspiration!

Nice. What rules did you use?

I tried TVG for Pirates as well, but ran into issues on firing and the puff factor. What mods did you make to overcome the different firing modes?
In melee, did you play it out as in the original rules – fight to the death?

Is the nice fortress a kit or built by yourself. And that fantastic ship. If it is a available kit, is is great enough for 28mm figures? It seems a little small for 28mm on the pictures.

Answers to questions:

The rules were "This Very Ground" a skirmish set designed for F&IW by Iron Ivan Games.

John is correct on the figures, 1/72 Orion and Mars Pirates (sounds like a space game doesn't it?) with Hat British marines.

The ship, if I remember correctly is the cheap Airfix kit "The Golden Hind" that I cut down to a waterline model. I believe it was 1/87, so it's actually a little small for the 1/72 figures and would be way too small for 28mm figures.

I built the fortress. There is a detailed tutorial on the blog with step-by-step pictures. Click on tutorials and you'll see it listed there (scroll down a bit -- it's in three parts).

As for modifying the rules: There really wasn't a whole lot of shooting when it came down to it, and when there was shooting, only a few guys out of a group could actually see the targets. What I did was basically keep track of each firer individually with the puffs and ignored the firing modes for the most part. I would have used the "volley" firing for the British had they ever been in a position to use it. For this game, it was easy to keep track of everyone. The groups of pirates didn't really move from their defensive positions and very few of the British were in a position to fire most of the time.
I did play out the melee rules as written, but I think next time I might just fight out one or two rounds and then do a morale check or allow for fallback moves. It was my first time through the rules, so I'm sure I screwed some things up, but they worked well enough for me.

Did you find the flash to be really bad on the MARS figs? I have heard that it is. That's why I haven't ordered any of their Pirates. Would like to find out that it's not true!

Thanks,

John

John

Some of the figures did have a fair amount of flash on them, but taken as a whole, I didn't think it was that bad. But there was some work to be done. Supposedly it varies from batch to batch though, so you never know what you are going to get.

I loved the small fort well done.
