Thinking about getting some kind of "ready made, no paint required, re-customizable, Toy army". I love the idea of arming each fig with an array of weapons, or changing them, or making up whatever the heck i want… (and well, lead figs just isn't so accommodating to my never ending whims; nor are plastic ones, but they are slightly better).

The Playmobil figures are bigger which I like, however the Lego minifigs have a greater assortment of things to wield, as well as helmets & faces, etc…

(I'm *not* looking to build vehicles or buildings with legos, etc as I'm going in a different direction with those items)

Are you joking? LEGO all the way! I have tons. Well, had tons. Now they belong to my son. Funny how so many of my toys end up in his room.

Lego…no contest

I guess I have to stick up for Playmobil. I have found myself hoarding little regiments of their latest releases of romans and gauls (most look more like Teutoberg Wald-esque Germans, but that's fine by me!)

Lego is 'nifty' and easily customizable (what having so many removable parts and all), but nothing has the charm of these guys. Ah, fine German engineering…

If you can't do action figures, then Lego all the way.

As an all-round toy I vastly preferred Lego, but if you specifically want an army, Playmobil gets my vote.

Both.

I recently re-discovered my old Lego Space sets from the late 1970s/early 1980s and have decided they'd be great for a sci-fi skirmish game. These have been augmented by a lucky find at a local fleamarket, a bag of about 50 Star Wars Lego minifigs for $5. USD Check bricklink.com to see the outrageous prices people are asking (and paying?) for some individual minifigs these days. Seems my $5 USD find was one of the best investments I've ever made.

And, over the past few years I've used the fact that I have three small boys to justify accumulating a pile of Playmobil Romans…

Have not done much of anything with either collection yet.

For wargaming, Playmobil gets my vote as well. Lots of cool sets with cool weapons, etc.

My Fort Apache Union cavalry used to mix it up with Arthur's knights all the time, with the Apaches swooping in to complete the havoc. Good stuff.

Lego minifigs all the way…
but then i'd be building vehicles for them as well!

ETenebrisLux15 Oct 2008 5:56 p.m. PST

Yeah.. I fully agree with the enthusiastic Lego supporters, IF i was going Lego all the way… Lego Buildings… Lego Vehicles < drool >…

But as I'm thinking of a Little Wars/Shambattle game style, i.e. using wooden building blocks to make structures… I'm still torn…

(hopefully this won't be decided by which type I end up accumulating more of off ebay…)

Lego, or for more detailed minifigs, try MegaBlocks. Their "Dragons" range characters and creatures are terrific. Unfortunately, unless things have recently changed, their actual building blocks are hard to get to stick together; you might want to invest in a rubber mallet if you decide to build the sets. The figures and creatures don't have this problem.

How about plastic army men? They're much cheaper, have cheap terrain, and come in less than a dozen colors. Further, you can get army men in many many different periods than WWII now.

1-Plastic Army Men

2-Playmobil

3-12" Action Figures

4-1/48th scale action figures

Lego is the way to go ….never mess with a man with a yellow bolt on the top of his head .

underling16 Oct 2008 1:40 p.m. PST

I collected a bunch of the Playskool Great Adventures series several years ago, along with other assorted beasties, so they're what I use for "larger" scale gaming. I do use Playmobil terrain (trees, shrubs, buildings, castle walls, etc.) though.
If I were starting from scratch I'd probably use Lego or Mega Blocks figures.

And Mulopwepaul, although talking about gaming with Lego, Playmobil, Mega Blocks, or Playskool probably *could* be considered a "religious" debate, I'd give us all the benefit of the doubt. ;)

I am a Playmobil convert.

I have a huge collection of Lego pirates -- ships, crews, islanders -- and done big games with them at Historicon. Now I have discovered pre-painted, 75mm German made figures. No building everything (which can be fun in and of itself) but mostly made up items. I have made DBA armies from the Romans and Gauls, and expect to make up armies from the new Egyptian figures.

I have made up a great collection of zombies and civilians/ police/firefighters / special ops / and soldier. The latter are painted by me but look good.

Now that I have learned to make conversions of the clickies I can make any thing I need. Take off a head, then change bodies, arms, legs. There is a vast resale network of all sorts of pieces on eBay from Germany, Malta, and UK. You can get extra parts of anything. I got a dozen bottles, many pistols, dogs, heads. Lots of used sets. There is someone on ebay who sells tanks and trucks of the Playmobil scale.
