Allen, That is a short Norsemen dressed up as a Roman. He was taking Wagner's Nibelung Ring to Mount Vesuvius. |
| Thomas Whitten | 14 Oct 2008 12:41 p.m. PST |
As for the photo, it looks like it may have been inadvertently scaled when box art was put together. |

*Romens* *Romens*!!! This is TMP!!! Or Sparta. Or something. Allen |
| The Reverend McTavish | 14 Oct 2008 1:12 p.m. PST |
I've got some in my hands. I got them unboxed before the full release, because I asked. I'm comparing them to the Mark Copplestone range of Late Republic Romans for Foundry. They are almost exactly the same height and stature as most of the Foundry Romans, although the detail is less exaggerated. Some of Mark's officers are a shade larger. They also match the Steve Saleh Greek hoplites. Part of the impression of short legs comes from the fact that they are in chainmail, with tunics showing underneath. Plus, of course, they are Italians. 5'6" in thick socks. The Celts will be taller, we are told. Don't believe anything you read on Frothers, BTW, as a general rule. The Frothers revel in their misanthropic attempts at crusty elitism; they only like three companies, two of which went out of business. |
| Monstro | 14 Oct 2008 1:14 p.m. PST |
Lets hear it for multi-scale hairy romens!! Me!, I'm all for anything that introduces a bit of variation from the imperial roman image that seems to have become the default roman period, add to that, within that period the image of the roman army seems to have become very stuck on the few popular images of the roman army portayed by modern re-enactors. Dont lets forget that what(equipment) seems common to us is only what is known from very rare surviving examples of what could also have been relatively unusual pieces in their time. So, hairy fat romans in leather padded gloves could be perfectly orthentik! |
| Slave2Darkness | 14 Oct 2008 1:14 p.m. PST |
The Frothers bunch couldn't say a nice thing about being handed $100 USD with no strings attached. Everything about WF Romans (not "Romens" Allen) look perfectly acceptable to me. Check out their website and make your own mind up, or do like I did and order a box; see for yourself, for the love of God it's only $30 USD – that's less than $.63/figure. link |

Rwad that site
gosh we are in the same hobby with people like those? |
| CPBelt | 14 Oct 2008 1:39 p.m. PST |
Do not do a google images search for "hairy romans" with safe search off. You have been warned! I won't be picking up these figs, but I do like them. |

They look OK to me. Not really my thing, but they seem OK to me. |
| Scott MacPhee | 14 Oct 2008 2:56 p.m. PST |
I'm painting some right now. The proportions seem right on the mark to me. These are nice figures. As McTavish wrote, the detail is a little shallower than on most metal figures I've painted. Still, my drybrush technique works perfectly well on the chainmail, so that's not really a big problem. I'll have some posts of the whole 48 figure box posted on my blog within ten days. |
| Augustus | 14 Oct 2008 2:58 p.m. PST |
Larger or smaller than the Warlord scuplts is my question? |
BigRedBat | 14 Oct 2008 3:19 p.m. PST |
I must say that none of the pictures I've seen of the original WF digital masters, or painted figures, have looked well proportioned to me. This is particularly true of the image of the figure on the box art
I can see where the Frothers are coming from. |
| Snowcat | 14 Oct 2008 4:37 p.m. PST |
They're short. They're cheap. There's better figures available in metal for a bit more $. USD Quality vs quantity. It's not exactly Frothers' Rocket Science. |
aecurtis | 14 Oct 2008 4:49 p.m. PST |
"There's better figures available in metal for a bit more $." Or Old Glory figures available in metal through the Old Glory Army for fewer $. USD Allen |

Hey, guys they fit well with Companion and Foundry Romans I have both lines. You will not be disappointed. Mike Adams |
| Snowcat | 14 Oct 2008 5:38 p.m. PST |
Condottiere, if you think there's too many whiners on Frothers, why do you go there? I've seen enough photos of these little men to know they're short. I don't need to hold them in my hand. Just like I don't need to hold a quality figure in my hand to know it's an excellent sculpt. If you're so determined to favour these new little Romans, just buy them. |
| Snowcat | 14 Oct 2008 5:49 p.m. PST |
Allen, you know your suggestion comes at a price. Something to do with your soul
:) |
| Snowcat | 14 Oct 2008 6:52 p.m. PST |
No. You said this: "Do you have them? Too many whiners on Frothers, who haven't even handled the product and are ignoring the comments of those who have them." How many times have you now been told the same thing? But you keep going, on 2 forums, to get God only knows what answer you want. Why? It's obvious the figures are short. If you want an army of 5'6" (being kind) plastic Romans, buy them. |

You know
sigh
this would be easily solved with a ruler next to a miniature as I will say in the current new topic. |
| Snowcat | 14 Oct 2008 7:16 p.m. PST |
Oh goodo. Alright, proportionately height challenged. Stunted. A bit dwarfish. IOW if they're 28mm tall(!) they still 'look' SHORT. And this was about how they 'looked', not how they measured. :) |

"Never said you'd have to hold it in your hand" vs "Too many whiners on Frothers, who haven't even handled the product" So, are you a mentalist? "I don't understand this "go away from Frothers" crap, an attitude displayed by some Christian fundamenalists on the defunct religious boards. Get it through your skull, I go where I like." Wow, there's a connection! *sigh* Just remember that some of the people you slag might also be in present company when you move from one forum to another.
are we there yet? |

Re: OG miniatures. A mangy dog cast in 100% glorious pewter at the end of the day is still a mangy dog
just a bit heavier. Damon, thus speaketh my opinion. |
| EagleSixFive | 14 Oct 2008 10:12 p.m. PST |
Look for thignselves
.. link Though the photos are distorting the figures once again. Many don't realise what digital manipulation can do to subject matter. In the above photos the figures are slightly compresssed due to the angle at which the image was taken, so look out of proportion. But jeez, most 28mm is out of proportion! |

Re: OG miniatures. A mangy dog cast in 100% glorious pewter at the end of the day is still a mangy dog
just a bit heavier. That's just the photos distorting the figures once again. Have you ever held an Old Glory figure in your hand! PS is whining about whining worse than the original whining? If so is whining about whining about whining the ultimate sin? Am I in trouble now? ;-) |
| Hasslefriesian | 15 Oct 2008 2:29 a.m. PST |
I don't understand this "go away from Frothers" crap
. And I don't understand this "Frothers said this thing and I don't agree with them so I'm going to another forum to get some support because I don't like people disagreeing with me" attitude you seem to have. If the photos put people off buying the miniatures then better publicity photos are needed. It's not the fault of the people viewing the photos of the miniatures that the photos don't do them justice, it's the fault of the company putting them out. I don't care for the miniatures and wouldn't buy them because, IMO, they look squat and ugly in the photos. I'm not saying that the miniatures are crap, I'm saying that the official publicity shots make them look distorted. |

The opinion of those who have handled the figures will tend to be the manufacturer and what ever favoured few have received them early. Not really opinions that can be counted on to be impartial
FFS anyway what is the big secret? All they need to do is show some clear unambiguous photos! |
| streetline | 15 Oct 2008 6:35 a.m. PST |
Not really opinions that can be counted on to be impartial I'm beginning to think that now the figures are shipping, much to many peoples disappoinment, a new stick is needed. The only "impartial" opinions will be those that don't like the product, obviously. |
| Hasslefriesian | 15 Oct 2008 6:38 a.m. PST |
Et tu, Hasslefriesian? Yup. Well, come on. It did look like you were trying to stir things up ;-) Ah, sod it. Things are too quiet, I'll join in. I hear Frothers eat babies, kill kittens and don't bother to prime their miniatures or clean off the mouldlines. |
| nazrat | 15 Oct 2008 7:05 a.m. PST |
Reeeaally? That's some good info! I will make sure to avoid those poltroons in the future. Not cleaning mold lines. The Philistines! |

Hasslefriesian: "I hear Frothers eat babies, kill kittens and don't bother to prime their miniatures or clean off the mouldlines" Don't clean off the mould lines? That's a burning offense! Break out the torches and petrol! Marhsmellows and franks to follow

Then just buy a box and make your own mind up. It's pointless asking other people as to how a figure looks, their views are purely subjective. My views on a figure may differ entirely from yours so why as me and vice versa. If you can't afford a box just wait a week or two until there are some photos of them. |
