I am sad to report that Old Guard Hobbies in Sterling Heights, MI is closing. The owner does not want to drag this out so starting tomorrow, Tuesday, October 14th, all merchandise will be on sale for 40% off.

NOTE: I am not the owner. He has authorized me to make this announcement on his behalf.

The Sword and the Grail in Asheville NC is closing at the end of October. I hope this isn't trend. I hate to see any shop shut it's doors.

I'm always sorry to hear about a shop closing up but, based on my visits, I'm not surprised. The few times I was there the staff were busy painting or chatting with their girl friend; the stock was disorganized, dusty and looked 10 years old. When I visited the in-laws I always went for a look but after a few yers I just stopped as it never seemed to change.

Is it just this site or both stores?

Schogun13 Oct 2008 10:24 a.m. PST

There's only one store -- Sterling Hts. The other location was sold a few years ago (to an employee) -- it's now Imperial Hobbies (same location).

I think Imperial Hobbies is gone also. I drove by it last week and saw it was closed.

I swung by Imperial on my way home and they have moved to a new location, if I recall it's on Middlebelt just north of Ford Rd.

Aww, this sucks. Old Guard is (was) really far away for me, but I enjoyed going there and did so whenever I could.

I don't even know of any other hobby stores around.

Grumpy Monkey14 Oct 2008 5:48 a.m. PST

They are getting pretty few and far between these days.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! (made this too long in my first post)

Old Guard was my favourite place to visit when I'm in that area. It was one of the best hobby shops I've ever been in, anywhere (from a military modeling, braille scale perspective at least!)!

Schogun, why are they closing? IS Al retiring? Or has business just been bad?

This is very sad news indeed.

Take a look at Michigan Toy Soldiers instead, up on 11 Mile near Berkley. It's right off I-75.

MTS is a great store as well, but they are quite diffrent in nature.

Gryfalia15 Oct 2008 7:35 a.m. PST

Hmm, any idea if they have Blood Wars/War Drums from D&D Minis or Clone Strike from Star Wars Minis?

deanoware18 Oct 2008 4:33 a.m. PST

I was by Old Guard yesterday (Friday) and almost anything worth purchasing is GONE! This includes Warhammer, 40K, Flames of War, Confronation: Age of Ragnarok, Axis & Allies, D&D Miniatures, Star Wars Miniatures and any board games!!!

When I saw how the shelves had been raided it was kind of sad but you have to wonder if all of those people who dropped what they were doing to save an additional 20% (Jeff already gave 20% off on most of his stuff) would have just purchased all this stuff they wanted little by little then there would be a store around to buy the other stuff they are sure to want in the future but will have to buy with no discount.

The only thing left of any quantity was old Privateer Press blisters and boxes, old Reaper and Warlord miniatures.

OK..this explains why the phone number was disconnected.
Damn. Another one gone.
