Since this is the solo board just wondering how many people are members of the SWA ?

Buck21509 Oct 2008 7:23 a.m. PST

No. I am a solo member (president, executive secretary, treasurer, sergeant-at-arms, beer-drinker) of the SRSWNA of WW (Scott Rogers Solo Wargaming Non-Association of Western Washington). I MUST enforce those by-laws regarding overdue dues payments on scofflaw members…

Hundvig Fezian09 Oct 2008 7:31 a.m. PST

Uh…what's the SWA in this context? Around here, it means "Schenectady Wargamers' Association" (essentially a community-center gaming club with some pretensions) but I doubt that's what you're referring to.

Hundvig Fezian09 Oct 2008 7:31 a.m. PST

Oh, right, Solo Wargamers Association, yes? Duh…

PapaSync09 Oct 2008 8:03 a.m. PST

Do they have a site/forum ?

Used to have one, but currently don't have a website – back issues of Lone Warrior (the quarterly journal of the SWA) are on Magweb though.

highlandcatfrog09 Oct 2008 9:19 a.m. PST

Yup, just got the latest issue of Lone Warrior yesterday.

Gave up membership years ago when I decided that you really don't need special rules to play solo wargames.

I did find the "Gussie" series inspirational though …

hurcheon09 Oct 2008 12:17 p.m. PST

Used to be, but they kind of wound down the UK side

Sterling Moose09 Oct 2008 4:29 p.m. PST

I play with myself, does that count?

True about the UK side, but I think that – the lending library aside – nothing has really been lost.

LW is as good as ever (IMHO) and is probably the nearest to an MWAN type magazine of any of the wargame society jornals (although I only see Slingshot, Arquebusier, and sometime The Journal, Hobilar and Ragnarok).

Sterling Moose – "that's so funny"

I used to be the North American Lending librarian. I don't recall ever lending out any books, games, etc. I think the internet really replaces a lot of what we used to be designed to do. I still read Lonewarrior on MAGWEB.com

I am browsing topics as I am reentering some sologaming and want to put on a FFL North Africa solo campaign.

Ken

As a soloist gamer, being part of an organization of solo wargamers is kind of like an oxymoron, isn't it? I can imagine what a Solo Wargamers convention would be like: everyone shows up and then go their separate ways to play games by themselves. Interesting…

Funny but there is a real use for a convention meeting of Solo Wargamers --- most newcomers to Solo Wargaming seem to want some coaching on "how to Solo Wargame". And while reading a Solo book is better than nothing, there are very few forums that showcase how some of the more advanced Solo practitioners do their thing, keeping it interesting, and breaking new ground.

THAT's where the SWA shines --- it's a quarterly that has a lot of thought-provoking articles in a number of different areas of interest. I usually end up reading it cover-to-cover, because even though I may never play out air wars or lace wars, the MECHANISMS that these authors outline can be transcribed to my Solo campaigns.

It's great that several of the old classic texts (like Don Featherstone's Solo Wargaming) are back in print, but the hobby has matured a lot in the intervening 35 years, and currently SWA is the only continuously published showcase for those efforts.

Daft question, how do I rejoin the SWA from the UK?

thanks

You can subscribe from the UK by email using PayPal by sending $30 USD US to lonewarrior@kc.rr.com Make sure you include YOUR mailing address in the text of your message.

Or send funds (paper currency or international postal money order in US funds) to Solo Wargamers Association, 1707 Ridge Road, Leavenworth, KS 66048, USA

Either way, that's a real bargoon with today's mailing costs. It's a great quarterly mag without any ads to gobble up the 50 plus pages per issue

(Just to be complete, North American subscriptions are $25 USD US Funds).

Bob

11th ACR: Your link leads to a Yahoo page which says:

"Yahoo Groups We're Sorry…

I hope the group's still there – or yahoo gets it fixed; I just submitted my application yesterday to join.

Or, people could demonstrate their rule systems, or run games set in their solo campaign worlds or ….

I'd go !

LTC Fraiser17 Jul 2009 2:40 p.m. PST

Sounds rather like a government of anarchists, eh? Sometimes, I rather hope to be able to recruit some solo players – or any players actually – to play in some campaign set in 18th Century (somewhere). Tried once, family illness caused me to stop before it quite got going. Well, back to my closet to play my solo alto tuba … where was I? Ah, yes: "Eine Kliene Nacht" … hem…..

If you contacted the SWA I'm sure you'd find players. And if you specified that turn around was going to be monthly/bi-monthly/quarterly/half yearly/whatever then I'm sure you'd pick up players that fully understand about fitting in gaming with real life.

Or, if you just wanted occassional input on a strategic decision or a tactical battle plan for one side whilst you gamed the other, then again that's the kind of thing SWA members (some, not all, it's not compulsory) get involved in.

Just some thoughts.
