H&R are more like 5mm and will not work with the others. I'd get some samples of each and then decide. Folks sometimes mix Baccus and Adler. |

H&R might have been the first company to make 6mm. Anyway, they date back quite far. The figs are much smaller than Baccus. I had a large collection of H&R and want to add some of the nice Baccus figs, but no go. The H&R typically come on strips, 5 inf, 3 cav. Here is a comparison, with 15mm. picture They look good in mass battles. picture for scale, the battle field is two TerrainGuy 2 foot square mats together. The figs are based on 40mm wide bases. |

Are there any distributors/retailers for any of these folks in the USA? I'd like to purchase as many figures as possible with as little as possible going for postage. |

I like Baccus and find the direct mail is not too expensive trans-Atlantic and is pretty quick I think some of the Adler heads are a bit big and Irregular miniatures are sometimes – irregular H & R are very nice figs, but as noted are actually 5mm I still use my old H & R French against my Baccus Austrians – but they do look a bit runty – definately could not mix units |

There are a few painted samples of 3 of the ranges on my website (go to Gallery): Baccus, Irregular & H&R/Navwar. tinytintroops.co.uk Tony Tiny Tin Troops |

Out of the 3 I would go with Baccus (the others are nice) but I think Baccus is slightly better and Pete's a nice guy very helpfull and knows his stuff. He said they where going to re do the English this year but not sure how thats coming along. Jules |

I have used Heroics and Ros figures for years and am very pleased with the range and style. The figures are well proportioned. Photos don't always do them justice. However, here are a couple that may be useful

Nice photos! This is why I have been reluctant to give my H&R French the boot, despite the fact that my Austrians are all Baccus |
Bardolph | 02 Oct 2008 12:04 p.m. PST |
I used to have a LOT of Adler, and I thought they were much nicer sculpts than the Baccus figs I had seen. But as a result they were also much more fragile. If I was doing it again I think I would go with Baccus. I still have a lot of ACW Heroics and Ros figs, and they are 5mm and not terribly compatible with either Adler or Baccus. |

I have tonnes to Adler and Irregular (selling the Irregular soon). I find that Baccus and Alder can go on the table together but not in the same unit. And to Australia Baccus are about 12.3c per man versus 13.7c for Alder for Infantry but Cavalry costs 31.5c for Baccus versus 30.3c for Adler and Artillery is $1.46 USD per for Baccus and $1.15 USD per for Adler. Irregular is 11.1c Infantry, 33.3c Cavalry and $2.40 USD for Artillery. Freight will obviously make things different for your part of the world but I hope this helps a little. My vote goes for Adler. Baccus has fine minis, but I like variety in poses, also in 6mm. Furthermore, Adler's horses are better sculpted. |
Ivan the Reasonable | 05 Oct 2008 2:14 a.m. PST |
I would agree with Minondas. I have Adler Naps, but if starting again, (like Bardolph) I would go for Baccus infantry purely because as they can be based as they come on the strip they are much sturdier whereas Adler need to be cut individually from their strip for basing which makes them fairly fragile. I would stick with Adler cavalry though, as mentioned, their horses are much better. In any event whichever you go for you can't go far wrong with either. Ivan. |

I have Baccus for WSS/SYW, no H&R nor Irregular so cannot offer an opinion. Ivan. |

I own the H&Rs and really am pleased with the detail they offer in this scale. They are 1/300 or as others say 5mms. I recently ordered some Baccus Russians and quite frankly am disappointed with them. The detail on quite a few of them aren't completely cast & it seems that the one figure of infantry on the end loses the bayonet easily :( As for the compatibility with H&R Vs Baccus + Adler of course they aren't. We are talking about a 20% difference in scale so one shouldn't expect them to. |

For Napoleonics I would recommend Adler, the range is enormous. They also have a fair range of ACW and WWII and a growing range of AWI; for some reason the SYW range, which is very nice, didn't take off and is limited to Prussians and Austrians. All their ranges are nice castings and the issues about 'large heads', not entirely unjustified, lessen once they are painted and appear quite acceptable when viewed from a gaming perspective. The cavalry are full of action although the sabres can be a bit fragile. Being in UK I have the luxury of being able to see both Adler and Baccus at various shows and both are very friendly and happy to chat about their figures. My personal preference is for Adler as I feel there is more detail on the castings. |

Irregular make Renaissance Turks which I use for the Napoleonic period. I didn't see Turks with any of the other manufacturers mentioned above. |
