Uh, no. They are from the American International Pictures costume department, circa 1975.

Come on Pol – everyone knows that if Hollywood has one fault, it's being overly obsessed with getting uniforms and other historical details absolutely spot on….

You almost never see them wearing the fancy sailor-collars when actually serving on a sub.

Dom, he didn't ask if they were accurate depictions or not. He asked if they were really 1916 U-Boat uniforms. The answer to that is "probably not."

I think I'm turning into Allen.

Ok. What if I had asked that? :)

They look WW2 vintage to me. As does the sub for that matter….

The lower ranks are at least wearing Kaiserliche Marine sailor hats, rather than the WWII Kriegsmarine hats the figures that Brigade sell to go with their Great War U-Boat are sporting. They at least look okay to me.

Don't really get much more than a fleeting glance of the officers uniforms in that clip. A while since I saw the film myself.

The officers you see in photos tend to look a bit more smart (collar and tie rather than those white woolly jerseys), but they were usually in or near port when pics were taken. Submariners aren't really known for adhering much to uniform regulations once out on a cruise.

I've still got my eye on that WW1 Brigade U-Boat:

Shouldn't they look alot like the WW2 uniforms?

Here are some pictures of what, I believe, are actual WWI U-Boat crews:

I have yet to find pics of crew in tropical attire.

CC,

You're picture is spot-on. The U-Boat leathers in gray commonly worn by engineering rates is a direct descendant of Kaiserliche Marine leather uniforms of WWI in black leather. the DD hats would have been worn as well, as the schiffe, or boat cap is a product of the early 1940s. Even Gunther Prein's crew still wore the round cap when they sunk Royal Oak in 39. All you need is a head swap on WWII figures. As an inexpensive reference you could try Osprey's UBOAT CREWS 1914-1945.

You da man, Pyrate!

Thanks.
