I am wondering, what all have you guys used for Pod Racing games. I have already heard of Spin-Out, which looks neat, but I don't think it is what I want. I am thinking of using Formula De, with some of the rules from Spin-Out.
Here are my current thoughts
- Use Micro Machine Pod Racers (If I can find them)
- Make 1'x1' boards to play on that use the same square system as Formula De for movement. I'll need around 12 of these to cover my entire kitchen table, each section will have some various terrain and such on it blocked paths, etc, and will consist of either a straight or a corner of various types.
- Add rules for ramming, repair, maybe some other things to make it flavorful

Anyways, what do you think can be done in this regard, also, how large are the Pod Racer Micro Machines (Length and Width of the Largest and Average) would be a great help.

My Micro machine pod racers are all based on 4cm x 7cm bases. There are two series of Micromachine Podracers (I've not seen any since c 2000), th eones on metal bases with wheels and some on flying bases.

If you want a copy of my rules (last played c2001 but quite fun) let me have your e-mail address.

I am watching some auctions for them right now, and it is looking like they are all on wheels.

Anyways, Rush N' Crush looks very promising for playing, though I'll still have to custom build the board.

But yeah, let me see what you've got, send them to biokanan hotmail you know the rest of the filler.

Thanks,
Glenn

Jamie Davis' Future Race rules are great. The wbsite is here, though it hasn't been updated in a while:

They can be ordered directly from the publisher, LMW Works, through the Classical Hack site:

Thane of Thane's Games used to have some simple but cool Pod Racer rules on his site. Haven't seen them in a couple years, though.

I heartily second Jamie's Future Racer rules. Great fun. These same rules have been used (with some slight modifications) for all sorts of similar games from Pods Racers, to Hovercraft to flying carpets…

Yeah, I see that, but alas they are not free, and I already have three free options available to me, logically without having ever tried them, I'll probably stick with free.

My biggest concern right now is going to be making the tracks, while originally I had planned on making 1' squares, I think it is in the games best interest to make 1'x2' boards, and a couple 1' squares depending on the configuration. So things like a simple curve would be a 1' square, a section where the road splits for a little bit would be a 1' x2' this creates the most gaming potential. My current plan of action for the boards themselves is foamcore bases with 1" insulation board on top, simply etch my squares onto the boards, then paint over it, and attach foam walls and such around the board, this way the tiles can be stacked, I should only need a few small boxes to store the entire game this way, and it'll be maybe $10 USD to build the whole game board. I figure the squares (not really square) will be 1.5" x 3" This should provide plenty of room for the vehicles to be placed. Now, at this size, there is not too much room, so I figure most tracks are going to be 3-4 rects wide. Which will fit nicely, leaving enough room for wider tracks and split tracks. I am going to do a few overhangs and such to add 3d sense, but this will be very limited as it will ruin the game if they are too common (And my ability to stack boards). The angles will have be very slight to prevent the pods from slipping down the ramp as well.

If you have some you are willing to sell, please contact me at the email address in the third post. Now, I am no certain what pods were produced, but from the N64 game I would really like to acquire Ebe Endicott and Aldar Beedo. But honestly, almost any would be nice. I also have a fair few things I can trade for them, though nothing particularly grand.

Thanks,
Glenn

Hmm, just had a thought, I wonder how Heroscape hexes will work . . . .

chronoglide20 Sep 2008 11:45 p.m. PST

when i (eventually) get round to playing it with the boys i'll be using adapted GW Dark Future rules and the bits out of the box…ready made deseert track and sand markers…i've got some banthas and jawas from thw WotC range and some of the Micro Machines re-based.

I know you are really only looking for free rules, but Future Race only costs $7 USD plus $2 USD for shipping. It's really not much and it does any outstanding job simulating Pod Racers or any other type of fast racing game you are looking for. I'll put in another recommendation for it.

rebmarine22 Sep 2008 5:09 a.m. PST

I just have to second Delthos' comments about Future Race. These rules have been used several times at the HMGS conventions with outstanding results. The first time I played them it was almost impossible to get near the table, there were so many people playing.

And the price is well worth what you get. I bought two copies from Jamie about a year ago and never regretted the "expense."

I haven't tried either of these, but was looking for rules a while ago.

I had a link to Thane's game, and I did try that once, but the link is broken now.

I've got a set of the micro-machine pods on flight stands.

I am currently following an auction by cjb471 and the user name sounds so darn familiar, is he a member here?

richarDISNEY23 Sep 2008 8:27 a.m. PST

Thanks guys. I really wasn't intrested in this type of game until I read this thread.

I will give this a go at the next club meeting!

bjporter23 Sep 2008 10:11 a.m. PST

Are the Future Race rules actually available? Last I heard they were being re-done and not available.

Glenn M28 Sep 2008 1:07 p.m. PST

Well I won me a set of 9 Pod Racers for around $10 USD including the shipping. I still need to settle on the rules, I really liked Rush N' Crush, however I think making a gridded playfield will be far too hard to work. I am currently thinking that my best bet is to use one of the unruled systems, then use pin-striping tape to set up the playfield, and use appropriate terrain to decorate it. I am just not sure I'll be able to gather the same effect, as it is hard to implement lane changing (which seems vitally important) without a grid.

To make my mission better, I just ran out of ink printing a rules set *headdesk*

Here is my tentative ruleset, I still have to determine speeds and such, as well as a lot of other detaily bits. I plan to swipe concepts from the various rulesets I have seen thusfar.

Glenn M29 Sep 2008 4:28 p.m. PST

Alright, well the main portion of the rules seem to be worked out, comments are appreciated.

I have now started on the terrain, most of it is just 1/2 blue insulation board, I plan to make a few more complex pieces, like an overhang and perhaps a cave with removable roof. A jump may be cool as well.

Unfortunately my camera batteries are completely dead (And I can't find the charger, argh), so pictures are currently not possible.

Glenn M06 Oct 2008 1:46 p.m. PST

Well, I got my Pod Racers in the mail today, I got the roller Micro Machine ones, it appears some of them are assembled using the build your own Pod Racer set. Which is pretty neat, I found a guy who sells these, if the game is fun, I'll probably order a couple.
