Survival of those whose Atmosphere systems didn't break down, you mean. The problem with highly redundant systems is you end up with a huge mass penalty. Having a complete Atmosphere system in each compartment starts to add up, and that's mass you could use for other things (like remass or cargo). The set we had on the sub massed over 20 tons, not counting the circulation fans. Paying multiples of that just to be able to not have a human on watch is unlikely. If it's easier to have a human awake and on watch than it is to pay the mass penalty for the Atmosphere systems, the engineers/Naval Architects will have a guy on watch. |
