Hi All,

I am painting up my 6mm Napoleonics and about to embark upon some Cavalry, starting with some French Dragoons to be precise.

It would obviously be easier to pain all the horses one colour but visually not that realistic. I know some regiments used the same type / colour of horse for all troopers, (Scot's Greys spring to mind), but that seems more the exception than the norm.

Did cavalry regiments try to maintain the same horse colours? What were the predominant colours? Was white a reserved colour for officers, (probably seen too many movies).

Any advice would be most welcome.

I also do 6 mm Napoleanics – I do the horses mostly shades of brown with the occasional white for an officer and black for elite units – trumpeters in grey

I use Baccus, so what I do is paint two strips the same horse colour then mix them up when I mount them on stands – I use Age of Eagles stands, 6 troopers per cavalry stand

Thanks for the link!
I am surprised by the sieze requirement for horses.
Even the heavy cav horses were quite small

The 'average' human being was also much smaller in those days, if the evidence of surviving uniforms is considered.

You got a point there :-)
