Still looking at this Abyssinia project and comparing ranges. Has anyone compared the sizes of the Askari Miniatures range with other ranges? For example, would they work well with Artizan miniatures, Brigade, etc?

I'm afraid Artizan and even Brigade figures are substantially bigger than Akari. Not compatible IMHO.

Are you sure you mean Artizan and not Anglian? Nigel just started a whole new Abyssinian range and as usual they are top class.

I've yet to purchase any of Artizan's or Brigade's miniatures, but I can tell you that an Askari Miniatures figure measures 25M on the Barrett Scale. They're excellently-sculpted figures, and highly recommend them.

By the way, have you checked your PMs lately, Aurelian? grin

Not wanting to contradict you, WillieB, but have a butchers at this:

I suppose it rests on how you define "substantially bigger."

Akari will work perfectly well with ALL the companies you mention. Not only that but the minis are great and the customer service is even better.

Cheers,

JB

Plynkes,

I've got to admit that these are certainly compatible enough, even to my 'purist' taste.

Perhaps I shoudn't have mentioned it since I only have a handful of early Askari figures (French legionnaires) and I felt that these were a bit on the small side to fit in with, for example my Brigade Schutztruppe and other colonials.

Take no further notice of my message then Aurelian, I'm obviously limping behind reality….

Willie, I would have said the same thing as you until I actually held the two together in my hand this morning.

Somehow the Askari miniatures "seem" smaller. But when I put them together with other figures that I imagined to be much bigger the difference just vanished. Odd that. Maybe it is the slightly more slender proportioning on most of the Askari figures that does it.

But I suspect it is witchcraft.

i like the size comparison charts but in my view the elephant is larger

I have a bunch of His berber figures and a few FFL and while on the slight side I've used mine with Brigades, Old Glory, Parroom and Artizan WW II FFL

Here is a picture from my blog of a unit of Askari tirailleurs leading a column of Old Glory Boxer Rebellion naval infantry and a column of Askari zouaves in a Franoc-Prussian War battle. To my eye (albeit somewhat elderly and not at all purist), they both fit well together.

Askari Miniatures are da bomb! Compatability wise Brigade Games Great War figures are superb models, but IMHO they're the biggest "28mm scale" that I know of, larger than Old Glory, Artizan, Copplestone, or Askari.

As for compatibility, Askari IMHO will match up perfectly well with Old Glory, Artizan, Copplestone, and Foundry.

Given the subject matter, I hands-down recommend the Askari Figures for any of the periods they cover, as Al Maurer makes a real effort to provide sufficient coverage of whatever period he puts his hands to. Al's customer service is excellent as well, making it all the easier to put together opposing forces for a new period.

Hope this helps! evil grin

They mix well with my Castaway French colonials.

I know its an old thread, but rather than start again, how do they fit with Rif Raf Miniatures if anyone has the two ranges. I'm looking at doing Rif War and was eyeing off Askari FFL to go against the RR Rif.

cheers
Jon.

Rif Raf are smaller than Askari, there are some pics on the SOTCW forum -

Thanks for that! From the pics the difference doesn't seem too bad overall and would mix okay. Nice painting btw.

cheers
Jon.

I've got plenty of both Anglian/Empress and Askari and they are a very close match, IMHO. I will post some comparison shots in the next day or so for you to have a look at and send a link.

Pict1709 Nov 2009 12:44 p.m. PST

Here are side-by-side shots of Anglian/Empress Minis with Askari Minis from my own collection, plus some commentary. They are both painted and unpainted.

I have also used some Artizan WW2 Italians (and converted Brigade Games East German Askaris), and they all mix well enough. The Artizan Italians have chunkier equipment but it doesn't spoil the models.

Thanks for that, lovely painting too – most impressive skin tones on the natives :-)
