was wondering what if any ideas you can suggest for say the colors for spanish or portugese troops in the new world..and were they basically the same colors from the napleonic period…also any ideas on manufaturers for minis would be a great help as well.

I use Foundry Marlburians for my Spanish garrison troops.
In an Osprey Jacobite book, the Spanish soldies for the 1719 look exctly like these figures.
This plate shows them in a gray coat, and red leggings.
I gave them Albatros Mauve facings … just because.

The London War Room has Spanish troops for later in the 1740s. Their website shows blue coats with red facings.

If you wish to go back to the 1690s, Dixon has Grand Alliance figures, and so does Old Glory.

A good reference, if you can find it, is Jose Maria Bueno's "Uniformes Militares Espanoles Tropas Virreinales (I) Nueva Espana, Yucatan Y Luisiana". I think I picked up my copy in Foyles, many years ago.

A number of the plates on fsultana's link to naval uniforms are from Bueno.

Here are a corporal of Marines and a naval gunner of 1717 from Volume I of El Ejército de los Borbones.

I used Old Glory Marlburian Wars Figures for my soldiers.

As for uniforms, reading about piracy soon convinced me that it was the classic "short, nasty, and brutal" lifestyle, it was only dashing and adventurous in Hollywood, and the only way I'd have fun was to accept the fact that this was something of a fantasy game. So, I designed my own uniforms, pearl grey with gooseberry pink facings for one unit and lavender facings for the others (honestly--I googled 'fop' and came up with a photo of a guy in a lavender 17th century suit). Strangely, I have had people ask me which army I modeled. "It's all fantasy," I say. "No, really, which one?" they ask. This may indicate that I have a reputation for a truly anal-retentive need to achieve historicity in my figures and peolple don't believe I could ever deviate from this.

Can somebody please explain to me wargamers fascination with pirates?
I just don't get it personanally.

Tell them "the Grand Duchy of Fenwick", Grelber!

And I don't have any pirates, myself, 95th, although friends used to.

I think they like having a different setting for 1:1 skirmish gaming that isn't F&I War or AWI. It also has a tie into naval gaming. And a liking for exotic uniforms probably plays a role too.

@ John the OFM & Grelber: any chance of pics?
(and, John, of your colorful anti-smugglers dragoons, btw?)
Cheers,
Jean-Louis
