What was the 'order/command' given to drop anchor? |
Virtualscratchbuilder | 21 Aug 2008 8:33 p.m. PST |
"let go anchor"? Though this would have been only one of several related commands, as anchoring is much more than just dropping the thing from wherever it was slung. |

"Drop Anchor" is the obvious reply, and (as any REAL Navy Man knows) "Anchors Aweigh" when you want to pull out of your parking spot. |

Yep "drop anchor". When leaving your parking spot it's "weigh anchor" – "anchor's aweigh" is the call from the chap up front when the anchor is actually off the bottom. |

Max, you are WAAAAYYY of base there. It's more like: 'Make The Boat Stop, Bob (or whatever the helmsman's name is)' 'Make it go that way, Bob (or whatever the helmsman's name is)' US Navy – Playing Chauffeur to the Marines since 1775 |

Time for a Navy Lark quote – clear the jetty, we're coming in fast and the brakes aren't so good

"Drop Anchor" and stay the hell away from it when she goes. It's really a sight to see, incredibly noisy too. |

I have to go with "Let Go" As in Let go the Starboard Anchor. At least that's the way I did it in the USCG for quite a long time. US Coast Guard---the hard core around which the Navy forms in time of war!! Mike |

I wonder if there's a Brit / US divide on this one. In my sea cadet days we always used "drop anchor" as did merchant navy types I've met, but in a random bit of Googling I found a Confederate States Navy signal book, and it includes the signal for let go anchor

Thanks for the help gentlemen, and a great link Dom. I'm working on some home rules for ACW naval for our club, and want to add some naval jargon for flavor. That site will be a great help. Gert1746 |

"Let go!" I've never heard any other order given. You'd know which anchor, because you'll have walked the anchor out to water level using the windlass, then put the brake on and taken the windlass out of gear. The anchor is let go as soon as the ship is stationary, or making just a little bit of sternway on the engines. |
