Hardly encouraging for an "Elite" when the cover photo shows an Englishman thumping a Scot and taking away his flag. Is one to assume the rest of the illustrations inside the book show Scotsmen running away, surrendering and weeping in Gaelic despair?

Yes. Of all the Scots armies that went to war, the one that got thumped at Flodden is probably least deserving of the 'Elite' designation.
