Size/ quality comparison?

ArchiducCharles27 Jul 2008 11:35 a.m. PST

The Perrys are slightly bigger than Sash & Saber; I'm not sure I would mix within the same unit, but I would use both in the same army. As for quality, well no one beats the Perrys imho, but the Sash & Saber are still very good figures and at that price, highly recommended.

I don't own any Elite, so can't comment on these.

I have some Perrys. Have seen some SS. Never seen Elite.

The Elites are nice but may be a bit big for the Perrys & S&S. The sculpting style is not to every ones taste. The Perrys are my favorite followed by S&S but I like the Elites as well.

My figures are mostly Elites, a good range and not as expensive as many. However to throw another name into the ring, for Prussians it has to be Calpe for me.

Not owning any Perry's, I can't comment. I posess a gazillion of the others. I don't mix them. I have some Foundry mounted colonels with my Sash and Saber, and they're fine together. My only wish is for Sash & Saber to expand thier 28MM Napoleonics. I'm hooked on them.

Regarding Elite's, I'm selective about them. Most I like. Their cavalry can use some attention however. I've mixed these with Connoisseur and the occasional Front Rank.

I have Old Glory, Sash and Saber, Perry, Front Rank, and Elite in my Napoleonic collection. I have mixed a few Front Rank in my Old Glory French Legere Bn (Carabiniers and Aigle Guard) and it seems to work. The others are not mixed--the Elite Miniatures that I have are Saxon Schutzen and Mounted Officers and they are a tad smaller than the Old Glory but not really noticeably so. They are a different style so I wouldn't mix them.

Elites are massive compared to S&S. You could happily place them on the same table but not mix them within units. Perry ditto compared to Elite.

Elite and S&S have a dynamic pose. Perry are more static and "toy soldierish".

Elite were sculpted a long time ago (generally the ranges are old but I know there are some new things). But they still hold up well in terms of quality. The skirmishers are very limited in poses.

The Perrys will always have a following. I think they are over rated. I bought a ton of their Naps when I first got into 28mm gaming. Before I painted them I found Elite and left Perry's stuff in the box.

The S&S are pretty good. Can't wait to see the OG2 stuff when it comes out. That could put the Perrys and others to bed.

I am looking at trying to put together either an Egypt OOB or a Rivoli one. Perrys and SS seem out due to period from what I can tell. I never have seen Elites, but read a few reviews on their Fr Rev collectors line. Blame all this on Eureka's Historicon booth and their new line. Just trying to figure out my options since they will be some time with their range in full.

The Eureka figures are pretty nice. I liked their grenzer figures in particular.

Cant comment on Sash and Sabre
Perry and Elite are just very different sculpting styles.
Elites are almost deliberately over -animated with exagerated facial expressions and some odd poses.Buying a unit from them provides an opportunity to have real variety in a single unit
They would look strange in the same unit as Perry figures.
They are good figures that do look fantastic when based up on table.
I would have no problems with units of Perrys on table next to a unit of Elite figures though.

I have a bunch of 40mm ECW Sash and Saber miniatures. I have not not have any 40mm Naps. However, the price of the 40mm S&S is less than most 28mm European imports. In fact, going through WarWeb, you can save a bunch. A word about S&S cavalry. If they are anything like the ECW line, they are worth it. The horses are HUGE. Very realistic size comparted to the rider, which is nothing I have seen in any other manufacture. So, if you can find what you like in the 40mm scale, S&S is worth a look at.

I don't have any 28mm sash and saber, just 40mm, they look nice, but are abit brittle, I lost more or less EVERY bayonet on my highlanders.

I do have 28mm perry in the form of AWI figs, and if the nappys are any thing close to the AWI line, I think you should be happy with them, besides they are comming out with some plastic french soon,

I personally own Front rank, Foundry, and old glory russians, and i have owned/painted Old GLory, foundry, front rank and Sash and saber Austrians.

for Russians, i think the foundry and front rank go more or less well together.the foundry are a tiny bit thinner, but not enough for the average person to notice. i use some foundry with the better OG Russian figures(in fatigue caps) and they work there as well. if you stick them with hte regular OG line they stick out though.

for Austrians, I actually like Sash and Saber the best. they also make the only Austrian sappers I've ever seen. Sooo cool! Old glory are in my opinion the best line troops in the current Old Glory Napoleonic. they don't really hold up quality wise to any of the others though. front rank are noticeably bigger then both, unfortunately.

I too wish Sash and Saber would thicken out their 28mm Napoleonic range. they are so nice, it seems a travesty not to expand it. their Austrian Chevaux Leger are amazing looking. i would *die* to see them do Austrian hussars. I bet they would rival the Front rank ones.

I can't wait to see the Old Glory v2.0 Austrians and Russians. based on the quality of the ACW stuff, they should easily compete in quality with both sash and saber and Perry bros.

I'm painting up an Austrian OG, Sash and Sabre army.
I find the Sash and Sabre nice figures, good animation with various heads and marching poses in both the line and grenadier figures.

The OG Landwehr are pretty decent, however I was a tad disappointed with the OG hussars. Some have detailing on the chest lacing… others, well, it just isn't there. Really a molding problem, rather than scuplting. Honestly they need to be re-done. Good animation on them.

I've seen the OG line figures and agree with someone who mentioned on TMP that the ankles were weak.
The Generals and Colonels are good, and the horses are a mixed lot, some sculpted quite well, others not so much but decent enough. I painted up 4 line sappers and 1 grenadier, nice figures.
I agree in that I wish Sash and Sabre would continue with the Napoleonic line. I'm very pleased with them.
