This book is a great read! I've got 39 pages into it so far and have enjoyed every one.

The book is ostensibly an investigation into exactly WHO the MitIM really was. But so far, it's been discussing who the REAL D'Artagnan, Athos, Porthos, Aramis, Cyrano, etc were. Lots of Gasconnading, dueling, gambling and whoring. MacDonald has a writing style best described as "racy". I suspect he likes a good story a little more than being strictly careful with authenticity, but I may be wrong.

At any rate, he conveys period "feel" brilliantly and so far, I've learned the low-down on how D'Artagnan came to Paris and how Louis XIII preferred being spanked by his coachman to doing his husbandly duties to Anne of Austria.

Much recommended!

"and how Louis XIII preferred being spanked by his coachman to doing his husbandly duties to Anne of Austria" hey, we all feel like that some days!

Nonetheless, the notion of the Duke of Buckingham wanting to have an affair with ANYONE'S wife is one of Dumas' more fabulous pieces of fictionalisation.

Not at all. Resolutely hetero and randy as an ape. Well, bisexual at least.

Try TIFFANY THAYER'S version of the Three Musketeers. Lots of racy stuff in that one. (wink, wink, nudge, nudge…)
