I just started doing the Western gunfight stuff in 25/28mm (Artizan so far), and was wondering if anyone had a suggestion about where to get a good train model for playing train robbery scenarios?

Thanks in advance,
Shawn

Try Toys R Us:

This one is about the right size for Artizan figs, and with a repaint should do the business (plus for $20 USD it's nice and cheap)

Just to be sure, take a miniature to the shop with you so you can check the fit!

This is a great train and i've just finished repainting it as well as some O-gauge track for my old west game.

The cars are a bit shorter than a real period car is (maybe 40% of true length) but in the context of a game it is great and way cheaper than the recent metal and resin scale train I saw.

I tried to pry the car tops off prior to painting so they could be removable during the game but no luck! They were stuck on good.

I think Old Glory came out with a 28mm train model. Am I right about that?

I don't know about Old Glory but Dixon recently released a metal and resin train model…

That was it. Dixon. Expensive if I remember, but very beautiful.

Your best, cheap bet is any of the "Express" train sets made by Goldlok. There were a nunmber of them in this series, including:

Western Express
Passenger Express
Patriot Express

Even a Christmas Express (I'd stay away from that one).

They are usually sets with a locomotive, a tender, and four more cars. There are subtle differences in the locomotive, and usually one car different (patriot express has a flatcar, passenger express has two passenger cars but no boxcar, etc).

Sometimes you only get 4 cars (loco, tender, two other cars), but extra items like more track (including switches) and perhaps station houses. The best ones are the 6 car sets.

Prices range from Under $10 USD to maybe $35 USD or so. I bought a Western and a Passenger set new for $15 USD each, plus postage.

Here's a Western Express on eBay for $8 USD (current bid) plus postage.

They are "about" the right size, come with track, can be repainted if you want, and are suitable for gaming. They are not the perfect size, but close to it. And cheap.

They come and go, so if you can be patient, just do a search once a week, and eventually you will score one cheaply.

Redoubt do one – or you could do the "take a figure to your local toyshop" option. You can find some pretty good stuff quite cheap that way if you don't mind a drastic re-paint job.
