This is something I've been think about for a while – a modular dungeon setup using boxfiles.

It would hopefully solve some storage issues and allow the peices to remain protected.

I must admit this is not dreamt up by myself. I see it done at Carronade 07 in Falkirk, Scotland by SESWC with their Alien 1889 game. I touch of genius I thought. The only piccie I can find now is here:

Anyone else out there done this???

Ooops that should read "A touch of genius".

best be modest at least at the start of the thread!

Not tried it myself, but I remember seeing a sci-fi spaceship layout done in "pizza" boxes.

You have to love well done Con Games that let you lift fun ideas. I played a Car Wars game that gave me lots of cool ideas for making version I was building better at Bayou Wars this year.

Good luck,

I believe Mexican Jack has done a bit of the same for some dungeon stuff. I have a bunch of boxes all stacked up at home to do it, just can't find the time to start it.

I've seen a very nice cavern set done with square boxes at a local convention. taller than pizza boxes though so the builder was able to get more depth and variation in floor level etc. Gave the cave feel quite well.

I think just approach it like any other modular terrain; making sure the openings are at the same points on each box face and the same size etc.

Thats why I love coming here, so many great ideas….

I'd thought about doing my "underground lair' project using a similar method. Good to know I'm not crazy.

Would be nice to see other shots of his layout to see how he managed things.

They look cool – now there is an idea for a Fallout Vault game!

This is good advice. I need to build a big multiroom lab-like facility in 75mm for my new project, "The Awful Things from the Racoon City." A cross between The Awful Green things from Outer Space and Resident Evil. Using pre-painted plastic 75mm figures.

Several years ago I built a pair of science-fiction station/spaceship/whatever pizza box set.

Pictures here, lower half of the page: warbard.ca/sg2gallery3.html

The hard part was fitting the walls so it still folded up properly and was also playable!

I've still got these pizza boxes, haven't used them for a game in a while – but they also double as storage boxes for my 25mm SF skirmish figures!

arabianknight17 Jul 2008 1:39 a.m. PST

Hmm, pizza.

Ohh boxes that is (must stay focused). Maybe I should take a trip round to my local Domino's and see if I can blag a few…

Although the box files are a better size for storing for me. The width of a pizza box could be a problem (and box files are more robust). I'll see when I start. I'll be sure post piccies as i get on.

Box files?

arabianknight17 Jul 2008 9:24 a.m. PST

Ogre,

Like folders but designed more for loose, unpunched papers.

This is an intriguing idea. I wonder what the cheapest but also most resilient box material would be. I was thinking plastic, but all of the boxes I found had rounded corners and sloping sides, so they wouldn't fit together well. Wood could work (particularly if one could by drawer blanks (maybe there's a more correct term?) cheaply enough--basically drawers without slides or hardware). Metal would be cool because you could magnetically connect rooms together. I would worry about the strength and long term viability of cardboard.

Any ideas/suggestions?

As a follow-up, something like this looks like a possibility:

And the dimensions aren't bad (2.5" x 6.56" x 13.25")--it could even be the basis of a building "blank", but at 2 for $12, it's a little pricey. I'll keep googling and share what I come up with.

Randall18 Jul 2008 2:13 p.m. PST

Okay, I think I've found a winner for now. It's cardboard, but cheap and the right size. See here:

I don't know anything about the store, but the product is listed as a "Stationery Box" and is standard US paper size (8.5" x 11" and 2" deep). It appears there may be a minimum order of 20, but at $1.06 USD each, that will hardly break the bank.

arabianknight25 Jul 2008 3:53 a.m. PST

i found those under "A4 box" here in the UK.

Another thought was to use hat boxes picture for a more modular layout.
