As I understand it, the colours of the pixellated camo scheme of the current Army Combat Uniform are sand, slate grey and "foliage green".

The only thing is, on every photo I've looked at, "foliage green" just looks like a darker shade of grey.

Is that just my monitor, or is it really more grey than green?

After about 25 meters it all looks like greenish khaki.

It is definitely a grayish green.

According to a friend of mine who used the ACU the green is actually a green-grey (but she added "it looks weird").

Seems no one is in exact agreement on the actual ACU colors… I suppose superior camouflage…

I put the ACUs on almost every day, and to my eye the three colors are:

German Field Grey (vallejo 830)
Green Grey (vallejo 886)
German Camo Beige (vallejo 821)

It's more grey than green, but there's a green hue to it. On some dye lots, I'd even say the beige color has some green in it.

We should have gone with Multicam.

I suspect some general's nephew developed the ACU pattern.

Heck, its all dust/mud/sweat stain colored after a couple hours anyway.

Also keep in mind that the colors appear differently in different light. I've noticed when I'm wearing mine in certain light that the beige color looks white and sometimes a little yellow, and the green in the dark actually looks like green.

Here is a great link for some reference, it was down for maintenance when I posted this, but should be available soon hopefully.

Thanks, folks. I was thinking of using the Vallejo Grey-green recommended by Sajiro, but as I've never seen foliage that colour, it's nice to have confirmation from someone who knows both the cloth and the paint.

We should have gone with Multicam.

Good thing they didnt, as I reckon it would be even harder to paint than ACU!

Back in the days of khakis, you could have 3 or 4 different shades of khaki in a single platoon formation. All would be regulation. Some would be new, some old, others a different manufacturer's dye lot.

Multicam's nice stuff, I've got a set for airsoft.

ACU and MARPAT digital camo works by breaking up the human shape, kinda like the WW2 dazzle schemes for ships.

Multicam works by playing with colors, and how the eye sees them. I like multicam better for where I play, but I think that ACU is better in a sandy desert.
