Hi All I'm going to go down to the store and buy (well fill in the holes in my collection of Vallejo) the recommended paints from the Vallejo ACW set: Vallejo paint set number 11 for ACW includes the following: 807, 844, 845, 865, 877, 896, 907, 908, 925, 928, 940, 950, 951, 953, 961 and 990. The question is which of these blues to use for Union coat and trousers? 807 – Oxford Blue 844 – Deep Sky Blue 907 – Pale grey Blue 925 – Blue 961 – Sky Blue 807 and 907? I'm not sure. |

For Union, I've mostly used Vallejo 807 for coats and 844 for trousers. Lately, I've tried Ceramcoat Midnight Blue for coats and Blue Jay for trousers, which seems to be a close match to my various sources, including Troiani. I've used 907 and 961 for Confederates but not Union. I don't have 925 in my collection of paints, so can't comment. I paint 10mm and my goal is to use colors straight from the bottles without mixing. |

I like 807 for the jackets and 844 similar for trousers. The blue for the jacket was dyed with indigo -- probably using the "Pencil Blue" method to get the dark colour. Indigo has a definite purplish tinge to it. I don't know what they used for the light blue -- it could have been indigio again with one of the lighter dying methods. I use "Oxford Blue" for Napoleonic French as well -- again, they were using indigo. 925 is a good candidate as well -- If I paint ACW in bulk I might be tempted to do a mix of 807 and 925. |

Oop, it turns out I do have Vallejo 925, I just don't use it much. At one time, I mixed 807 and 925 to produce a really nice color for Union coats. I think the ratio was 3 parts 807 and 2 parts 925, but that's from memory and I've lost my notes, so I'm not too sure about that ratio. |

I've used Vallejos you mention for my 6mm minis. You can see some pictures on my sadly neglected homepage: hem.bredband.net/b524563 Go to Miniatures/ACW/Adler ACW review I. I used Oxford blue and Light Sky Blue for uppermost minis. Minis in the middle are painted with 925 Intense Blue. |

Just for grins, do the Vallejo painting kits come with a guide or just the colors? |
