Looks like a great book. Would like to get the English version

Jovian119 Jun 2008 10:28 a.m. PST

Kinda pricey – around $40 USD for the book – looks like a good resource though!

dandiggler19 Jun 2008 12:03 p.m. PST

More like $60 USD given the exchange rate, I think I'll wait for a review first!

The editor told me that they have been looking for a US retailer in order to avoid expensive shipping costs. I'll write a review when I receive mine.

The editor will attend the World Expo in Girona (Spain), the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th July 2008 on the JMD MINIATURES stand (173)

Not to be pedantic about it, Olivier, but that would be the publisher, rather than the editor.

Thanks for fixing my mistake. :)

I received my book (french version) this morning. It's a very nice book with superb pictures (17th-19th century paintings and drawings) and photos of weapons and armour of the french army museum (Invalides)

The chapters
I The thirty years war
II The french army before the war (1617-1634)
III The french army during the war (1635-1648)
IV Uniforms & Banners
V the french army in action (the battles).
and some appendices.

Received my English copy this morning, actual cost through PayPal was $86.65 USD because they require registered Air Mail to ship to the US. However, in addition to the wonderful book, which you have probably already read the reviews of, I received a beautiful 54mm resin model of one of the French officers depicted in the book. No explanation or paperwork with it, but I suspect it's from JMD Miniatures and was sculpted by Jean-Paul Dana. It's very much in the style of the old Mokarex or early Historex figures and is a work of art. Most of us would gladly pay a fair price for just the miniature, so I count that as bonus. Why? Because the book is amazing!

I own many books on the TYW, including all the various Osprey, and would gladly trade most of them away for this book. Exquisite period works of art depicting French troops and personalities accurately, along with excellent new artwork by the author and/or illustrators, including all of the "known" standards for the French "regular" regiments at the time of the TYW. Yes, with enough research you can find most or all of this yourself in several different places, but it is presented here in one magnificent volume. It is not inexpensive, but I feel is still excellent value for what it represents. And, if they are able to set up distibution in the US, that will (or should) make the price a little more attractive.

Just as a little update to this old thread, Old Glory 15s has released a line of Thirty Years War models, and these include French!

The French musketeers actually have the ribbons and frills on the edges of their pants, as well as some wearing the boukinkan hat, and others wearing the round fur-edged cap. Only down side is they have musket rests but they are mostly easily removed.

So they are models for the French that actually look like th French, rather than ECW troops. Thought the contributors to this thread might like to know ….
