I was going to post about a line of 15mm Samurai and it struck me, WHERE THE HECK DO I POST IT? I first thought Ancients but Samurai go all the way through the mid 19th century. Then I thought perhaps on the Asian board but NOOOO there isn't even that board. So the question is,

"Does TMP need a samurai board?"

Will pikemen span even longer but we do not have aboard for them either. Samurai is a major line in wargaming. You do not see someone bring out a new line of Pikemen. Knights there are a few but they generally fall in the first catagory with some spill over to the second. Heck I would be happy if there was an Asian Warfare board.

Asian warfare board sounds good. I am always torn about starting this period. I even did a Sengoku army list for Warmaster fantasy, making and posting paper counters for it to the Warmaster yahoo list.

Want to see something amazing? Check this guy's 10mm army!

James:

Asian Warfare sounds okay – but what time-frame would it encompass? All the way to modern-era – like WWII PTO, Vietnam, etc.? Samurai topics do seem to get "lost" in Medieval & Renaissance boards (which just by their titles seem geared towards Western warfare). A good enough topic for discussion (or a "dreaded" poll?). grin

CPBelt:

Thanks for that link – wow – 10mm – it looks really well-suited for the banners and mass-look; not to mention the terrain/fortresses.

I agree with Condottiere. We don't have a knights board. People come out with new ranges of them.

Also if you had a samurai board would it include Legend of the Five Rings and fantasy samurai stuff?

Probably not, I suppose.

Still I think if you are posting about Samurai you can figure out if it goes into the medieval or renaissance board.

Griefbringer10 Jun 2008 10:51 p.m. PST

I think it is quite simple, post to the board of the appropriate period:

- Japan between 500-1500: Medieval board
- Japan between 1500-1700: Renessaince board
- Japan in 18th century: 18th century board (not a whole lot of warfare then, though)
- Japan in 19th century: 19th century board
- Russo-Japanese war: Early 20th century board
- Japanese invasion of China (1930's): Interwar board (perhaps crosspost to WWII, since this continued until there)
- WWII Japan: WWII boards
- Fantasy samurai: Fantasy board
- Samurai in space: Scifi board

As for Japan before 500AD, the actual historical sources tend to be a bit sparse.

More boards. Lovely

vojvoda11 Jun 2008 5:10 a.m. PST

And one Board to Unite them all! See it is a topic that covers them all. Rather then sort thought all of thess have one board called SAMURAI! I think it is preety clear that it goes only as far as the end of the warlords. As for early Japanese there is so many works that cover pre 500 AD. I don't have access to my library right now (packed up for a move) but even a search of Osprey titles will give three or four volumns of the period. Either way I thnik Samurai should be in the title.

No more boards, please. I post my samurai posts under Renaissance.

Caesar11 Jun 2008 7:20 a.m. PST

I look for Samurai posts in Renaissance, occasionally skim Medieval. But a Samurai (and 'friends') board amongst the Renaissance boards would be lovely!

Poll!

I like the Asian board, but maybe call it the "Classical Asian" board, to separate out Vietnam and the like.

If the ECW and ACW get their own boards, then Samurai and Asian warfare can have a board. Each of the former lasted less than a decade, and Samurai lasted centuries.

I prefer the term "Warring States" as it's more correct, but less descriptive.

Knight Templar11 Jun 2008 10:49 a.m. PST

No more boards.

Caesar12 Jun 2008 11:06 a.m. PST

Interestingly, there's a new board for something called "Sabotage".

Daffy Doug13 Jun 2008 9:04 a.m. PST

I noticed that too. Weird. Maybe we can have a chess board, and Axis and Allies board, and D&D board, and Tekumel board, and Warcraft board, and Age of Empires board, and WDBMMM board, and LotR board, WotR board, and Crusades board, and HYW board, and Age of Reason board, and Mongols board, and Romans board, and Normans board, and Vikings board, and pyromaniacs board, and muscle cars board, and body builders board, and breakfast cereals board, and bar B quers board, and amusement parks board, and pet llamas board, and bald eagles board, and Muppets board, and VW Bettle fans board, and dun buggy board, and National Parks board, and wood carvers board, and leather workers board, and archery board, and sharp shooters board, and martial arts board, and skate boarders board, and bicyclists board, and bikers board, and Sober Riders board, and AA board, and MADD board, and retired policemen's board, and book club board, and gardening board, and matress testers board, and fans of Li'l Abner and Daisy May board, and Calvin and Hobbes board, and Baby Blues board, and married with children board, and singles club board, and fruictarians board, and veggans board, and freegans board, and 'puter hackers board, and divorcee's board, and psychiatrist's union board, and grocer's union board, and realtor's board, and model train fan's board, and slotcar racer's board, and photographer's board, and dictionary reader's board, and raisin grower's board, and card designer's board, and meteorologist's board, and astronomer's board, and retired astronauts board, and authors board, and professional kibitzer's board, …………………..

I'd second the motion for an "Asian Warfare" forum. But then I think there should be a "Dark Ages" forum too.

Caesar11 Jul 2008 7:18 a.m. PST

How did the poll results affect this?

imrael11 Jul 2008 7:48 a.m. PST

Bill – how about having a tagging system for posts. This would allow samurai material to post to the ancient/medieval etc but have separate Samurai tag.

Quite a big development I know, might be nice to think about in the future.

Rich Knapton13 Jul 2008 10:15 a.m. PST

Sorry, no Asian board. It's racist.

Samurai is very very different than any of the other periods listed. It is a strange blend of Fantasy, Science Fiction, and History unlike any other period. It is alien to any western tradition and the entire thought process and culture makes Samurai stand best on it's own. We need a unique Samurai board. Lumping it in with other medieval, dark ages, and whatever makes as much sense as lumping in Martians.
