Does anybody play this classic anymore?

If not, do you play anything similar?

streetline21 Nov 2003 9:19 a.m. PST

I'm waiting for the Clix version (for my sins). Note that i have no reason to think there will ever be one and this shouldn't be taken as starting a rumour etc...!

SJ Games is going to re-issue the game, with a less-detailed mode of play, according to their website :-) www.sjgames.com

CommanderCarnage21 Nov 2003 10:24 a.m. PST

They have already released less-detailed duel sets. You can get them directly form their website.

I have so many fond memories of car wars, ram plates and bumper triggers being first among them, but I just can't cope with a game where actions are taken on a 1/10th of second time scale.

I am most excited about a possible newer simpler version from SJG. I'll have to check out the site.

There are several automobile combat rulesets available online - I'd give the URL if I could think of them...

Scurvy21 Nov 2003 1:08 p.m. PST

even the old CW ditched the ten phase turn in favour of a five phase turn.

I miss playing CW.

There are some nice scratch built battle cars at the doghouse yahoo group.

TBTerrain21 Nov 2003 2:46 p.m. PST

The only CW I ever played was the original three in the mini boxes, supplemented with a couple Uncle Al's catalogs picked up at random. So I had no idea they'd changed the turn sequence. It has been about 18 years since my last game.

The simplified Car Wars, often termed CW 5th edition, tanked after initial excitement. The reason is the wide belief the rules revisions made did not do enough to help speed up the game. If they try to release it again with revised revised rules, it will be an uphill battle. Many people bought the new edition and were very angry that while it made some good changes, it did not go far enough. A lot of others were ticked that the game did not go into Matchbox scale and instead remained with the cardboard counters.

Online there's Axles & Alloys or Road Rage v8 . Road Rage has a forum too.

"tanked after initial excitement"

I wouldn't say tanked, actually, the problem is the vehicle design book has been too long delayed. Once it is released, I think many of the problems will be resolved.

The new rule sets would have really benefited from more examples.

Now the Axles and Alloys website is down. Does anyone have any of the links from the original page? Or rules add-ons?
Just started playing it as a race game, worked fantasticly with some minor amendments.

Scurvy24 Nov 2003 4:27 a.m. PST

I would like to see a good 28mm auto combat game.

I keep thinking of doing a hybrid of GorkaMorka and Necromunda - using the driving skills with the necro skills and go from there - not quite as good as a proper set of rules mind, but I don't like Necro being stuck on one type of planet anyway - I am starting to work it to use it like a 'new' version of RT - plants, animals, new ganes, bring back some of the old equipment etc - until I finish my own ruleset that is!

Nekron9924 Nov 2003 8:36 a.m. PST

Converting to matchbox scale (or any other) is easy, using the turn key template, just make it twice as long as the size of car you are using. The angles of the Dturns will be the same, just the length changes. We played with matchbox to 1/35 models. Just need a bigger arena.

I have finally finished my racing rules. We use a Scalectrix track marked into a grid.

However I was wondering if any of you play or have played Winner's Eye View by SDD games. Have searched the web for reviews but no luck.
