Fits in nicely with a hypothetical campaign I'd like to run centering around Tampa Bay.

Would that be an ACW or Zombie campaign? grin

I didn't know the Union had forces at Tampa during the ACW. I knew they were at Key West,Pensacola, & St. Augustine. Sounds like potential for a good skirmish.

There was actually a small skirmish that took place in Tampa in Oct of 1863. There was a small engagement at Ballast Point when the troops that burnt the ships in the article above were returning to their ship.

It would be a great skirmish as the Union troops tried to get back to their boats while the confederate cavalry tried to stop them.

As a side note just north of Tampa between Brookesville and Gainesville is the Dade Battlefield where about 100 US regulars were wiped out by Seminole Indians some years prior to the civil war. The troops were in march column to the Tampa fortification (Fort Brooke I believe) when they were ambushed. They have the spot identified were the soldiers cut down trees to form a triangular breastworks for a last stand.

And there were apparently lots of small Union raids along the coast, targetting salt works and cattle.
