I have a rather specific question, I am hoping that someone out there can help. I went and saw Iron Man and was wondering if anybody can tell me the full name of the agency that at the end of the movie gets abbreviated to S.H.I.E.L.D. Thanks |

Pick one: o Supreme Headquarters, International Espionage, Law-Enforcement Division (the first, and my preference) o Strategic Hazard Intervention, Espionage Logistics Directorate o Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division link "Don't yield, back SHIELD!" |

Oh, yeah, apparently the last one is from the movie. (I don't remember it, but it probably went by too fast for my leetle brain to follow.) |

This is the one I grew up with
Supreme Headquarters, International Espionage, Law-Enforcement Division |

Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement & Logistic Division is it . . . |

on a similar note did anybody stay through all the credits and watch the scene at the end? |

No I didn't but I wish I had. |

Yes, stayed through to the end. Not sure why I did but I had a vague recollection that there was an "extra" after the credits. Glad I did! w. |
mmitchell | 13 May 2008 8:47 a.m. PST |
In the comics, the first one was the CLASSIC, original acronym. The second one is from later comics, I believe. And the third is from the movie. link |

Yes, saw the extra tidbit at the end of the credits. |

This film got pretty well slated in the Sunday Times (UK). Was it that bad? Doug |

Spaeking of extras, Robert Downey will have a cameo in the new Hulk movie as Tony Stark. Marvel is trying to show that all of their movies happen in the same universe. |

Doug, no it was not that bad (I also read that review) – I thought it was a very good film. I particularly liked Downey Jnr. but most importantly my two kids (especially my son) thought it was a blast
and that is good enough for me! |

It was great fun – a well made movie with good casting and effects. Shallow and predictable in parts, but this is Iron Man not an art flick

Robert Downey will have a cameo in the new Hulk movie as Tony Stark Woolies are selling Iron Man toys that include a "Hulkbuster" suit of armour

Setting up for the Avengers movie in 2011. We'll be seeing Thor, Captain America then the kids will be screaming "AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!" Can't wait to see Cap! Brian |

Critically speaking, the movie has been REMARKABLY well-recieved, considering it is an action movie. Sunday Times is very much in the minority. And, yes, I ALWAYS sit through the credits, unless the movie sucked so bad I don't care if there is an epilogue. |

Anybody else see Captain America's shield on Tony Stark's workbench? |
| emckinney | 13 May 2008 10:23 a.m. PST |
Plot? Enh. Script? Enh-plus. Some good bon mots. Visual effects? Pretty good. Gwyneth Paltrow? Wasted on a generally annoying role. Robert Downey, Jr.? Just entertaining to watch. "I'm Nick Fury, M---a F---a." |
Parzival | 13 May 2008 10:43 a.m. PST |
My son and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought Robert Downey, Jr. played Tony Stark perfectly— flamboyant, over-the-top bored genius billionaire playboy who doesn't realize he has a heart of gold. Jeff Bridges was terrific as Obadiah Stane, Stark's (eventual) nemesis. It's a comic book action movie, but it's a good one. And the effects are terrific. |

It was very good, very true to the storyline. Here's a tip: If it's a comic movie, then always stay until after the credits. Always. You also learn interesting things from credits. Like the charachter Ahmed was played by the actor Ahmed Ahmed. Facinating. Except that's not Fury. It's just not. Jim Carrey would be more convincing. |

Except that's not Fury They should have gotten Hasselhogh to reprise his Nick Fury roll. 8) |

Nick Fury was based on the character in The Ultimates comics series, Marvels supposedly "more realistic" Universe. |

No, I didn't catch Cap's shield in the movie! Here's what my google fu found: link |

Stayed and saw the trailer after the credits. Anyone else disappointed that they cast Nick Fury wrong again? |
JammerMan | 13 May 2008 4:28 p.m. PST |
And the affable Stan Lee as a "Hugh Hefner" persona. They are getting pretty good at turning comics into movies these days. |
| quantumcat | 13 May 2008 4:30 p.m. PST |
I'm interested in seeing how they handle Janet Van Dyne, the gene-splicing,bug telepathy and Pym particles. We need a bit of that before the Avengers assemble. They've also got to do the Iron Man arc that mimics Robert Oppenheimer's mental illness (and Tony's reaction to heart disease?) expressed in the comics by alcoholism. They'll have to decide what part (if any) the supernatural plays in this universe before Thor,Dr.Strange, and the Mandarin show up. (So far,Ghost Rider doesn't link with Spidey, the F.F,the X-Men,etc. Agatha Harkness,Blade and many other could be given non-magical explanations even if they asserted occult origins.) |
Tgerritsen | 13 May 2008 9:31 p.m. PST |
Considering that in the Ultimates universe, Nick Fury was unashamedly based on Samuel Jackson (and the first time they show him, it's basically a drawing traced from a publicity still of Samuel L Jackson) I don't see how you can see he was 'cast wrong.' Is he the Nick Fury of the Silver Age and 1970s? No. Is he the bad ass Nick Fury that for the last several years has been extremely well received in the comics? You bet. |

Supreme Headquarters International Espionage & Law Enforcement Division was akin to Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF), created during WWII along with the original Captain America (and Bucky) to fight Nazi Germany (led by the Red Skull). Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division is the modern, post 9-11 acronym. |

Like this; He was cast wrong. It doesn't matter who the goofy version was based on. The "real" actor bites. He can't play a leader, he just doesn't have it in him. |
| streetline | 14 May 2008 9:02 a.m. PST |
He looks right. He feels right. I'll wait until he gets more than 12 seconds screen time before I'll have an opinion on anything more than look or feel. |
| nazrat | 14 May 2008 7:47 p.m. PST |
So that's one against and LOTS more for! Sounds like he was "cast right" to me. |
