Looking to start a cheap army with 1/72 plastics and augment with metal. Which time frame should I go with as far as selection and is 20mm the scale to chose that matches the best?

This kind of seems the wrong way around to be going about it Ashokmarine? Surely it would be better to pick a period you are interested in first then seeing what is available?

Sorry I should have stated I prefer Ancients?

Zvezda, Hat and Caesar do some great ancients of ALL periods. Check out Plastic Soldier Review. All go well with 20mm lead.

The Zvezda are particularly good

1/72nd plastics are generally 23.5-24mm (if that helps you make a comparison with metals). Mark "Extra Crispy" Severin often has comparisons of miniature lines. I'm not sure if he has covered 20mm/1-72nd ancients. Mark's site is here deepfriedhappymice.com

Yep.

Generally speaking 20mm metals would be best to match 1/72 plastics. There's a huge amount of 1/72 plastic ancients out there but relatively few 20mm metals. I only know of Newline Designs but I'm sure there are a few more out there.

Need to look at it on a range to range basis. Lets face, not all 1/72 scale figures are compatible with all 1/72 scale
figures!

There are a few comparisons on my site:

Newline are very compatible. Here is a pick of some HAT phalangites led by Newline command figures, the musician, standard and officer.

I also use Newline to flesh out my plastics.

GarrisonMiniatures,

Some of your 25mm look like they will work with 1/72 plastics. I think the Saxons may end up alongside my plastic Saxons

For my birthday I ordered some 1/72 metals from Tumbling Dice to add to my army of plastic Vikings from Strelets and Zvezda.

I'll post my opinion on compatibilty once I receive them from the UK.

Thx for the help guys.

The Saxons, Normans and Sung Chinese are all 'true' 25mm. Generally, the '20mm' ranges are also around the 24-25mm size, though not as bulky. In fact, the are often a shade taller than the true 25s. Careful choice of ranges and figures and, as seen from the comparisons, there is quite a bit of overlap. Some of the 25mm ranges, such as the Geeks, have much bigger horses than the 20mm range. Even here, though, you can mix and match. I was considering doing a 20mm Numidian cavalryman from the Roman light horse. However, I have found that the 25mm Numidian will fit a 20mm horse – only difference is the head looks a bit big, but nothing serious.
