Can anybody recommend the best Vallejo color to use on 28mm AWI British gun carriages? I used neutral gray with light gray highlights,but that doesn't seem to look right to me.

The main thing it should look like is "faded". They were not painted with top of the line 2008 Floor and deck enamel. The paint would weather and wear, the wood would chip, etc.
What you did sounds good to me.
I would prime black, and drybrush with lighter and lighter shades of gray, sand then paint the metal fittings black.

Yup,thats pretty much what I did.I looked at the guns at the Saratoga Battlefield as a reference actually.

Dry brushing the black metal parts with steel and rust adds to the that field look as well.
