I have been searching the internet in vain to find some pics of Belgium soldiers uniforms circa 1940. I have some Peter Pig French with Adrian helmets which I was going to paint up for a platoon. I just wanted to make them look a bit different from the actual French platoon. I am only guessing at the Adrian helmets. did they have a darker brown uniform? Anyone got any thoughts or pics? The Mollo books are very helpful. Unfortunately, Osprey has not provided any help with these early war combatants. - George |

Richard, this is what I've found so far: link link The uniforms presented in the first link represent those from WWI, but I don't believe there was any change in the shade of khaki used by Belgium between the two world wars. France was one of the last European countries to adopt khaki for it's army, in 1935, replacing their famous horizon bleu from WWI. As a suggestion, the best way to differentiate Belgian from French troops is through their collar patches, both of which were located at the tip of the collar in the form of a diamond. French uniforms displayed khaki collar patches with darker (black?) details, while Belgian collar patches were colorful. I believe the line infantry wore bright red collar patches outlined at the top in black, while the Ardennes Rifles' (Chasseurs Ardennais) patches were green with a gold boar's head. Good luck on your research and minis, Richard! |

Richard, I found another link for you: link George, that is a great site! It would seem that it's the one and only site on the web for info on the uniforms of the Belgian Army in 1939-40. |

Thanks for all these suggestions chaps. One distinguishing features seems to be the absence of puttees (like the French) and the use of some form of black leather gaiter. It might be possible just to paint out the puttees in 15mm with a little PVA in the paint. I like the link with the collar tips but at 15mm I don't know if my hand is steady enough!! Thanks again Mon amiees Richard |
