This may be pointless – but would it be possible to start a long-term debate over a standard basing size for 1/600 and 1/1200 ironclads?

I'm new to ironclads miniatures gaming. It is not a period that is as accessible as, say, World War II or Ancients. It sure is nice to pick up rules like Warhammer, or Flames of War, and have your hand held, in terms of basing. If the base sizes were standard across multiple rules sets, a.k.a. WRG/Warhammer, it would help.

It seems like some of the current authors of the more widely used rules frequent this board. What are the odds that ya'll could come up with a standard set of , base sizes in mm, that could be included in new editions of your rules?

I base all my ships for all naval periods but they are for ease of handling etc. They have no affect on game play – what rules do you use where the bases matter?

Like EC, the bases are only for ease in handling. We play "Ironclads" without hexes, and anythign like LOS or range is ship to ship. Base size is irrelevant. It would have to be, considering the huge size differential.

The echo the others, base sizes are irrelevant in all the naval games I've played. For me they just need to be big enough to fit the ships on easily and maybe put some id information on. Some rules do suggest base sizes, but unless you are planning on a lot of ramming, I'm really not sure it makes much difference. Maybe this matters more for Triremes and things?

Fair enough – I get it.

I guess that I'm so used to worrying about unit frontages in land-based games, that it struck me as odd.
