Who does good Normans and Saxons in 28mm for the Battle of Hastings? I recently found genealogical roots to the battle and it has sparked my interest in the era. Thanks, -Steve |

Old Glory Normans are very good. My army is mostly OG and vintage Minifigs. |

I'd second Crusader – they have very nice horses, which is important for a Norman army! |

Crusader. Gripping Beast are also OK and compose most of my Norman army
but I got them before I discovered Crusader. w. |

I have Foundary, Black Tree and Crusader Normans, and Gripping Beast and Crusader Saxons. Crusader are very good and well priced for both ranges. My favourites. D |

I think Crusader honors the OG Army discount--I recall having heard that at one time, so if you are going to build good sized armies the 40% discount is another plus. |

Avoid Gripping Beast. Crusader figures are top notch, infantry mixes very well with Black Tree for more variety. You can also use Vikings some Spanish El Cid period figures from Crusader or Black Tree or Artizan. Black Tree horses have very long legs and will not mix with Crusader. For infantry: Crusader, Black Tree, Artizan For cavalry: Crusader, Artizan Avoid Gripping Beast! |

I actually like Gripping Beast. I have Saxon, Norman and Viking armies done nearly entirely in GB |

For Normans I find that Perrys' crusaders are the best option. |

How do crusader and Perry mix? |
TeutonicTexan | 15 Apr 2008 10:22 a.m. PST |
Does anyone know if the Crusader Norman horses have been switched to the newer EBob horses. The Saxon horse appear to have been created after the switch, but the Norman horse appear to be the older beefier horse in the pics. Myself, I'd use Perry cav, if the Crusader Normans still come with the older sculpted horse. @mondo, Crusader and Perry don't mix well to me, at least in the same units
Crusader is taller and chunkier. |

I believe that the horses have been changed. People constantly clamor for the old horses. |

I believe all of the Crusader cavalery includes the newer horses. Certainly the dark age ranges. |

Does the Old Glory discount really apply to the Crusader line? |

Does the Old Glory discount really apply to the Crusader line? It says they do on the website. crusaderminiaturesusa.com Towards the bottom. |

WHat's wrong with Gripping Beast? Most of the range appears to have been redone, and for the better. I have Normans from ALL of the ranges listed, and GB are probably my favorites. While Crusader is well sculpted, they suffer from the problem of a lack of equipment variety (after a while all tje equipment on the figures starts looking the same). GB, however, includes Conicals in both smooth and Spangen varieties, as well as ridged helmets. The range is more interesting, IMHO, though I wish the infantry had a few more POSES (rather than just head variants)

The Crusader infantry is superb. I prefer the Perry cavalry to Crusader's but both are excellent. Gripping Beast is decent but I'd say that their Norman line is one of their weakers ones. Saxons are excellent however. Perry and Crusader do not mix! |

Well I'd have to say Perrys on both counts for the Normans. Their infantry both armoured and unarmoured is superb! Gripping Beast are fine in my book. Crusader? A friend has these. A bit on the larger side of 28mm and they had a bit too much girth for my tastes. Old Foundry a little small but fine with Perries. Newline Design, I like their infantry and again fine with Perries. Old Glory, can't comment on the Normans, had some Saxons with unusual poses. Guy |

Crusader for Normans and Saxons and yes the Crusader USA are 40% off with the Old Glory Army membership. So you will make your $50 USD membership back very quickly. A pack of Crusader infantry with 8 figures or cav pack with 3 + mounts is $9.60 USD per pack; so $1.20 USD per foot and $3.20 USD per mounted. Also if you want to expand your Normans to look more like 12 Century Normans aka Siculo-Normans just buy some of the Crusader El-Cid line and mix them into your army. |
Pictors Studio | 15 Apr 2008 9:40 p.m. PST |
Crusader for both. If you are just doing Normans then I woudl say that the Perry's have the edge but for both I would go with the Crusader. They are very, very close in quality. I think the two do mix pretty well and have units that are mixes. |

WHat's wrong with Gripping Beast? The horses, above all. If anyone needed to replace their horses with eBob's, it's Gripping Beast. |
