I'm finally getting around to finishing my 1/600 ironclads. I've decided to go upscale, and get a really nice Seascape mat, and use transparent plastic basing.

Three questions:
1. I'd like to use "Ironclads" (I've got my old Yaquinto copies). I know that it is being re-done as a hexless game, and was hoping that someone knows what base sizes are being considered. I asked this question here two years ago – so I figured that it was time to ask again.

2. How big a playing surface do most of ya'll need? 4'x6, 5'x7', or 6'x8'? And if anyone has playtested any "Ironclads" scenarios – how big a table was it?

3. Any suggestions for high-quality, pre-cut, thin, clear bases?

Thanks!

I've found that for 1/600 ACW battles a 6x4 table is more than adequate because most of the fighting is done at point blank range.

I'm afraid I can't help with the other questions.

I would use light blue acrylic bases – Litko could make them for you. I'm sure any naval rules out there ignore the bases entirely in any case.

The battle reports here link are mostly on a 9 by 5 foot ping pong table.

I prefer not to base in 1:600 scale. However my experience is different from Mark's; most of the rules I have measure aspect and firing angle using bases. Bases would certainly be easier for this (and safer for the model) than unbased, but I just like the look of unbased ships.

Use Brown, NOT blue for the bases and table cover. ironclads sailed on the muddy rivers of teh South, they just look wrong on blue water.

I found a 6 x 10 to be adequate size – especially if using lots of large cailiber rifles or shore batteries.

having sais that the last time I travelled the South most of the rivers appeared a deep, dark blue/green :)

I've played with 1/600 scale ironclads on a 3' x 10' runner carpet, conveniently already gray-brown. Looked great!
