Hi I'm building a Carthaginian army. I've started painting foundry Numidians and Spanish, and r looking at A&A miniatures for the elephants and spearmen. Can any 1 tell me how good these figures are and how well (size wise) they will work with foundry figures? I am also a little unsure as to what lybain spearmen r?( Spanish, Poeni, Afrcia) I've got Osprey's Men at arms, Carthaginian wars but that doesn't say really. Thank u

If your Numidians and Spanish are from the Caesarian range then they will fit in with A&A quite nicely. The older Foundry Carthaginian range (found amongst their Republican Romans) are smaller figures 23-24mm to eye level. Libyan troops in the Carthaginian army were native North Africans recruited into the army and using Hellenic (ish) style equpment and tactics. The figures described as "veteran spearmen" are depicting Hannibal's veterans that campaigned in Italy with him and returned to Africa to eventually fight at Zama. They are assumed to have at least partially Roman/ Italian equipment as a lot of their original kit will have worn out over the years. If you do not have a copy try to get hold of "Armies of the Macedonian and Punic Wars" by Duncan Head, published by WRG. This has a good overview of the armies of Carthage and the different soldiers and their equioment. |

Also take a look at the Newline miniatures. I just saw them at Crises '03 in Antwerp, and they are very good. I think you can mix them with the old Foundry range without a problem. Best of all, they are much cheaper then Foundry. I also must agree with Adster that the WRG book is the best source for Carthaginian troops and allies, next to Macedonians and Successors. |

Newline figures are good, but the varity of poses per figure type seems a bit low (I have their Punic cavalry:2 troop poses, 1 leader, 1 standard bearer, 2 horse poses; and Libyan javelin men: 3 poses, no command). Another good company is 1st Corps for both quality and service. I have their African/Libyans in Cuirass (4 troops poses, plus 1 leader, one standard bearer and 1 musician) and Numidian cavalry (4 troops poses, leader, musican, but only 1 horse pose)Both companies' figures are smaller than A&A (at least their Samnites) and newer Foundry (Celts). As for A&A figures themselves, I don't have any Carthaginians yet, but their Samnites are very well done and seem to size up well with new Foundry. Whichever company/ies you choose, they all produce pretty good lead at a much more reasonable price than Foundry. Chris |
