To follow up on Shakespear's question:

What rules – and by implication, what style of ACW gaming – would you recommend for use with the new 28mm ACW figures from the Perry's?

Skirmish or you're going to go broke.

I have "brother against brother", but I have a lot of 1:72 unpainted plastic miniatures. I wonder if itīs worth the change to 28mm.

Perry miniatures would cost .3 pounds by mini… so 30& per 100 minis army… I am curious about what rules to use, too. Maybe thatīs too big for "brother against brother".

Maybe 28mm ACW minis should be easier to paint than other 28mm minis period?

sorry about my english and thanks for the answers

Why would the minis make any difference? If you like Johnny Reb / Honor & Glory / Volley & Bayonet / Fire & Fury / Brother vs. Borther / Guns At Gettysburg then just use those…

The figures will not determine whether I get into big regiment gaming. The fact that I have too many other fish to fry will.
Metal or plastic, makes no difference.

I'll get a box or three, because all the Cool Kids are doing it. I'll probably try The Sword and the Flame, because I am convinced that those will work for everything. Or, Brother Against Brother. Or GASLIGHT.
But no Big Rules.

I'll second John the OFMs sentiments.

I'll be using brother vs. brother

What about for larger battles. I already have about 70 regiments (12 figures 3 to a stand 2"x1") and are looking for fun fast paced rules.

"I'll be using brother vs. brother"

While I am a BIG JRIII fan, for what you are looking for I would try and get a copy of Give em the Cold Steel. I have not gotten Guns at Gettysburg so I can say about them.

What is all this "Fear" of bigger rules outside of skirmishing? I am doing JRIII in 40mm. 25mm are used for other eras just as well. I mean it is not like 25mm ACW JUST came out. Any of the current ACW rules will work just fine. Comes down to the question of what level you want to game. For me a regimental game (where basic unit is a Regiment or Artillery Section or Battery) is the way to go. At the Bde level I think one does not get the feel for ACW formations and battles. That said I prefer Bde level for Napoleonics. Go figure.

Oh and one more while the Perry stuff look great what the heck does one do with a six horse team on an average gaming table?

I will be using the six horse team on a 6' by 24' table we game at.

I Have not found a "fun" regimental game with an ACW fell yet James so I am still looking

CPBelt22 Mar 2008 8:06 p.m. PST

For a regimental game using 28mm figures based 2 figures per stand, what would be an average size table? Would 5'x6' work ok? That is as large as I could go.

avidgamer22 Mar 2008 9:15 p.m. PST

When Warhammer Historicals comes out with their rules use them. :)

Pictors Studio22 Mar 2008 9:18 p.m. PST

I second avidgamer. I'll probably be using the WACW rules when published. I'll probably use LotOW before that time with the Alamo supplement and the plains war thing mixed together.

Apparently there's a set of (the Perry's own?) rules comes with the infantry boxed set.

nazrat23 Mar 2008 7:54 a.m. PST

The Warhammer Civil War rules are apparently already available on the web. I know not where, but my buddy Whitemanticore had printed copies of them for us to peruse as we drove to Cold Wars. They are sketchy, but still very good as they are based on the WHECW book. I am looking forward to the actual book that Warhammer Historical will be releasing. We talked to the author at the convention and it seems to be coming along nicely.

Who said anything about "fear"? I don't have the space, money or time to do a 1:20 Antietam game.
I am concentrating on Brandywine.

Martin Rapier23 Mar 2008 9:14 a.m. PST

I am only realy interested in large scale C19 battles, so I'd go for something like V&B or Fire & Fury.

Trajanus23 Mar 2008 12:19 p.m. PST

Try Guns at Gettysburg – Four figures per stand 16 – 24 figures per unit.

Thanks for the link, Astro. I am truly a lazy sod!

Why not 1 figure = 1 15mm base. Fire and Fury has inch bases, about the size of GW slottas. Many battles in the scenario books are 200 stands a side. 36 for £12.00 GBP makes that about Ģ100/side

kallman24 Mar 2008 7:53 a.m. PST

Sorry Naz I meant to send the link our gaming group after we got back from Cold Wars but yes the yahoo group is the WHACW or link as astronomicon posted. There are three versions on the site and I went with the one based on Warhammer Ancients with much of the rules for WECW thrown in. The other two are based on 40K and WFB. Not sure why but hey at least there were plenty of option. As Naz stated we talked to the author slated to write the Warhammer ACW book for Warhammer Historicals and asked to be playtesters.

I've played a couple of diffenrent Warhammer based ACW rules and it works very well. Ratio for miniatures in the current version I am planning on gaming is 1:20. Considering that most regiments did not get about 400 men in strength you can do a pretty good game that reflect the regimental tactics that ACW was fought in. So you would have units that could have anywhere from 5 to 20 models so a 100 or more figures a side would make for a good game. Investemt wise you are looking at about 200+ dollars in figures if you go with the Perry Plastics or while Sash and Sabre still have their sale on you can do even better. I believe Chris told me at Cold Wars that he would still have the sale going till the end of March.
