The 21st Lancers, in 1898 during the Nile campaign, was rather over=due for a battle honor. It had been so long since they had one their Regimental motto was said by other cavalry regiments to be the rather unkindly "Thou shalt not kill!" Which might account for the almost desperation their c.o. showed during the Battle of Omdurman in charging the Mahdi's defeated forces. |
